Never So Brave headlines Hungerford Stakes

Saturday’s card across five racecourses delivers a concentrated dose of top-level flat racing, headlined by the Group Two Hungerford Stakes at Newbury where Andrew Balding’s Never So Brave bids to rediscover his winning groove.

Never So Brave seeks return to form in competitive seven-furlong showdown

Never So Brave carries the strongest recent form into the Visit Malta Hungerford Stakes after a fruitful 2025 campaign that included victories in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Summer Mile and the City of York. This season has been less kind: four starts without a win, though his latest effort in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood showed he can still mix it among the best. Balding’s gelding is expected to set a bold pace and connections will hope that renewed confidence translates into a first triumph since York.

Coppull arrives with upward momentum, having produced a career-best run in the July Cup at Newmarket where he finished fourth of 11 behind a strong finish. The step up to seven furlongs marks a new trip for the lightly raced three-year-old, and connections will be encouraged by his progress. Symbol Of Honour, another Newbury specialist with two wins on this track, also steps up in distance after a Group Three Hackwood Stakes success at Newbury and could reprise his Newbury mastery.

Extremely Zain, sent by William Haggas, remains very unexposed after his Ascot defeat in the International Handicap and could take another step forward here. The gelding went into that race unbeaten and was a short-priced favourite to continue his winning sequence, but could only manage fourth. His presence adds another layer of tactical intrigue to a race that already boasts multiple angles.

Dubai Honour returns to defend his colours in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes

The Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury opens the afternoon with Dubai Honour facing five rivals in his first start since finishing fourth in the Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick in April. The gelding has been a model of consistency under William Haggas, winning 12 of 37 starts, including four Group Ones and banking over £5 million in prize money. Mount Atlas and Tabletalk provide credible opposition, ensuring a competitive renewal of a race that often serves as a springboard for autumn targets.

Five tracks, one theme: quality under the microscope

While Newbury stakes its claim to headline status, Deauville, Doncaster, Lingfield and Ripon each offer compelling contests that will shape narratives ahead of the autumn. At Deauville, the Group Three Prix de la Nonette provides a key trial for middle-distance talent, while Doncaster’s Lincoln Handicap meeting tests staying credentials in the early stages of the season. Lingfield’s All-Weather programme sharpens form for winter targets, and Ripon’s sprint handicaps highlight horses readying for the Cambridgeshire. Across every venue, Saturday’s programme is less about spectacle than scrutiny—each race a deliberate step toward bigger prizes.

The tactical heartbeat of the Hungerford Stakes will centre on pace. Never So Brave’s front-running pedigree and Balding’s willingness to dictate terms suggest a fast early gallop is likely, which could suit Symbol Of Honour’s closing style or Coppull’s late burst. If the tempo rises too quickly, Extremely Zain—still unexposed after his Ascot defeat—may find the stamina to exploit any weakening in the final quarter. Conversely, a more patient approach from Never So Brave could allow Symbol Of Honour to repeat his Hackwood Stakes victory, using Newbury’s undulations to his advantage.

Saturday’s card is a reminder that flat racing’s heartbeat is steady rather than spectacular. Never So Brave’s attempt to rediscover his best form, Dubai Honour’s return after a high-profile Australian campaign, and the supporting cast across five tracks all point to a day where progress matters more than headlines. For punters and trainers alike, the focus will be on which horses emerge stronger rather than merely faster.
