Newcastle’s Matthias Jaissle looks on bright side despite lacklustre Leverkusen defeat – The Guardian

Newcastle United’s pre-season tour hit another stumbling block on Tuesday as Bayer Leverkusen eased to a comfortable 2-0 victory in Germany, a result that will do little to ease concerns about Eddie Howe’s side’s defensive frailties. Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle’s head coach, acknowledged the shortcomings but clung to the positives, insisting there remains “still a lot to build on” despite the defeat.

What happened in Leverkusen and why it matters now

Newcastle’s second half saw a tactical switch, with shirts changed at the interval—a rare sight in a friendly—but the changes failed to spark a response. Leverkusen controlled the game, with Newcastle’s backline repeatedly exposed, particularly in the opening 45 minutes. Jaissle’s post-match assessment was candid: “We knew Leverkusen would be strong, but we didn’t show enough intensity or organisation.”

The defeat follows a pattern of defensive lapses in pre-season, raising questions ahead of the Carabao Cup second-round draw tonight. Newcastle’s Leverkusen win exposes defensive fragility again, a pattern that could prove costly if unaddressed before the Premier League curtain rises.

Jaissle’s balancing act: optimism amid the chaos

Jaissle’s refusal to dwell on the scoreline masked deeper frustrations. He pointed to missed opportunities rather than Leverkusen’s dominance, noting that “we created chances, but we lacked the final third quality.” His focus on the positives—”the intensity in patches was good”—suggests a manager keen to frame the defeat as a learning curve rather than a crisis.

Yet the absence of a clear defensive structure was glaring. Newcastle’s backline, already under scrutiny after a shaky pre-season against Everton, struggled to handle Leverkusen’s pressing and quick transitions. Jaissle’s side will need to tighten their shape urgently, especially with the Carabao Cup draw looming—a competition where defensive errors are often punished.

What comes next: squad gaps and fixture demands

The defeat underscores the urgency of Newcastle’s transfer business. With the window still open, the need for defensive reinforcements has never been clearer. Jaissle’s comments suggest he is working with what he has, but the evidence from Leverkusen points to a squad still adapting to his demands.

Newcastle’s next pre-season fixture—a clash with Everton—will be another test, this time under the scrutiny of a home crowd. The Toon Army will expect progress, but Jaissle’s side must show more than fleeting moments of promise. The Premier League’s unforgiving nature waits for no one, and Leverkusen’s performance was a reminder that pre-season optimism counts for little when the real battles begin.

For now, Jaissle’s glass-half-full approach is understandable, but the cracks in Newcastle’s defensive foundations are widening. The question is whether they can be mended before the season’s first whistle blows.
