Odegaard back for Arsenal vs Dortmund LIVE!

Arsenal’s pre-season march toward a Premier League title defence resumes at the Emirates on Saturday, with Martin Ødegaard returning to captain the Gunners against Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup. The Norwegian’s presence alone signals a step closer to full strength, even as key figures like Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka remain absent from the squad. With less than a fortnight until the Community Shield against Manchester City, every competitive minute counts for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Ødegaard’s return underscores Arsenal’s shifting priorities

Ødegaard’s inclusion in Arteta’s starting XI marks his first competitive appearance since the World Cup and sends a clear message about the club’s evolving ambitions. The Gunners have already secured midfield reinforcement with Bruno Guimarães, though the Brazilian’s debut will have to wait until his £75m move is formally completed and he is officially registered with the Premier League. Until then, Ødegaard’s leadership and familiarity with Arteta’s system provide a stabilising presence as Arsenal chase their second consecutive league crown.

Gabriel Magalhães, too, returns to the fold after featuring in Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to Real Betis, a reminder that even pre-season fixtures are treated as opportunities to refine cohesion. The defence, shorn of Rice and now with Gabriel restored, must quickly rediscover the rhythm that helped secure last season’s title. With the Community Shield looming and the league opener against Coventry City just three weeks away, Arteta cannot afford to waste time.

Transfer focus shifts as Vinícius Jr. extension ends Arsenal’s pursuit

Arsenal’s summer transfer strategy has already pivoted after Vinícius Jr. signed a new deal at Real Madrid, closing the door on a move that had dominated headlines. The Gunners are now weighing alternatives, with Julián Álvarez and Bradley Barcola emerging as potential targets, though both face obstacles. Álvarez remains tied to Atlético Madrid, while Liverpool appear closer to securing Barcola’s signature. Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye has also been considered, though his own links to Saudi Pro League clubs complicate matters.

Defensive reinforcements remain a priority, with Liverpool set to finalise a loan deal for Barcelona’s Ronald Araújo. The centre-back’s arrival would address a long-standing need, though Arteta may still explore further additions before the transfer window slams shut. The club’s willingness to “hold their nerve” suggests a measured approach, even as rivals like Manchester City and Liverpool continue to flex their financial muscle.

Emirates Cup as a barometer for Arteta’s reshaped squad

Saturday’s fixture against Dortmund offers a snapshot of Arsenal’s progress, with youngsters like Myles Lewis-Skelly and Max Dowman handed starts alongside established names. Christos Tzolis, the Greek winger, also features prominently, his inclusion reflecting Arteta’s willingness to blood talent while maintaining a competitive edge. The Gunners’ pre-season has been deliberately structured to test cohesion, with the Community Shield serving as the first real examination of their readiness.

The Emirates Cup, once a peripheral exhibition, now carries weight as Arteta’s squad seeks to build momentum. A strong showing against a side featuring the calibre of Niclas Füllkrug and Julian Brandt would send a signal to the rest of the Premier League. Conversely, any stumbles could expose lingering gaps, particularly in midfield depth and defensive transitions.

Arteta’s side must navigate a congested schedule with precision. The Community Shield clash with Manchester City arrives on 14 August, followed swiftly by the league opener against Coventry City on 21 August. Ødegaard’s return, Gabriel’s recovery, and Guimarães’ impending debut all contribute to a narrative of cautious optimism. Yet the window for experimentation is narrow, and the pressure to deliver from the outset has never been greater.

For now, the Emirates welcomes back its captain. The question is whether Ødegaard’s presence can translate into the kind of performance that silences early doubts. With Dortmund in town, Arteta has one last chance to fine-tune before the real tests begin.
