Papers: Atletico Madrid ready to sell Alvarez to Arsenal

Arsenal’s summer transfer window has entered its final phase, and the club’s pursuit of Julian Álvarez is no longer a whisper—it’s now a front-page demand. According to Saturday’s papers, Atlético Madrid have finally softened their stance and are now willing to sell the Argentina striker to Mikel Arteta’s side. The move would represent more than just a squad upgrade; it could be the missing ingredient that propels Arsenal from Premier League champions to Champions League winners.

Atleti’s U-turn opens the door

The Daily Express reports that Atlético Madrid have shifted their position on Álvarez, who has been a non-negotiable figure in Diego Simeone’s long-term plans. For months, the club’s CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín insisted the striker was untouchable, even rejecting a reported £170m bid. But now, with the transfer window nearing its close, the Spanish side appears ready to cash in. The Gunners, who have already made a statement of intent with a 3-0 demolition of Coventry, are among the clubs pushing hardest to finalise a deal before the deadline.

The timing could not be more critical. Arsenal’s opening-day victory at the Emirates was emphatic, but Gary Neville, writing in Alvarez pushes Arsenal over CL line, argues that the club still lacks the “magic up front” required to compete at the highest level. “If they could get Julian Alvarez somehow, that would light this place up,” Neville said. “They wouldn’t just become Premier League title winners—they’d go the next step and win a Champions League.”

Arteta’s squad takes shape—but gaps remain

Arsenal’s summer has been defined by pragmatism. While rivals splashed cash on marquee signings, Arteta focused on shoring up his defence and midfield, bringing in players who fit his system. The result was a 3-0 win over Coventry that felt like a statement of intent, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Ødegaard all on target. Yet the Gunners’ frontline still lacks a definitive No. 9—a player who can turn good performances into great ones when the going gets tough.

The BBC’s match report on Arsenal’s thumping win over Coventry highlights how the team’s newfound swagger stems from last season’s title triumph. Ødegaard, speaking in his programme notes, made it clear: “We don’t feel we have to defend anything. We want to do it again.” But Neville contends that Álvarez’s arrival would give Arteta the flexibility to rotate more effectively, ensuring that even when key players are missing, the team retains a cutting edge. “He needs a bit of magic up front—someone that can win a game for you when you don’t play well,” Neville added.

Window closes, pressure mounts

The transfer market’s final days are always chaotic, but Arsenal’s situation is particularly urgent. Brighton’s rejection of Liverpool’s second bid for Yankuba Minteh shows how quickly valuations can shift, while Chelsea’s attempts to reduce their centre-back numbers underline the volatility of deadline-day deals. For Arteta, the priority is clear: secure Álvarez before the clock runs out.

If the deal materialises, it would cap a remarkable summer for Arsenal. The club has already shown it can dominate domestically, but the Champions League remains the ultimate prize. As Neville put it, Álvarez wouldn’t just be another signing—he’d be the piece that pushes a squad already brimming with talent over the line. The question now is whether Atlético’s change of heart comes in time.

The next 10 days will decide whether Arsenal’s title defence is built on solid foundations or if they still need one last spark to turn potential into glory. If the papers are right, that spark could arrive in the form of Julian Álvarez.
