Papers: Chelsea eyeing move for Porto goalkeeper Costa

Chelsea’s transfer activity under Xabi Alonso is taking a surprising turn, with the Daily Mirror reporting that Porto’s 26-year-old goalkeeper Diogo Costa is now a transfer target for the Blues. Costa, who has previously been linked with Manchester United, has a £51m release clause that would require Chelsea to meet his valuation if they are to progress with a deal. The potential pursuit comes as Alonso reshapes the squad following a summer of high-profile arrivals, including the unexpected signing of Jordan Henderson—a 36-year-old midfielder returning to Stamford Bridge after spells in Saudi Arabia and Brentford—and Danny Welbeck, both of whom mark a departure from the club’s previous policy of prioritising young, appreciating assets.

Costa emerges as Chelsea’s latest goalkeeper target

According to the Daily Mirror, Chelsea are preparing a bid for Porto’s Diogo Costa, whose £51m release clause would need to be activated if the Blues are to sign him. The 26-year-old has been linked with Manchester United in the past, but the latest reports suggest Chelsea are now among the clubs monitoring his situation. The potential pursuit of Costa aligns with Alonso’s early emphasis on defensive stability, a theme that has defined his managerial decisions at Stamford Bridge so far.

Costa’s inclusion in Chelsea’s transfer plans comes amid broader uncertainty over their goalkeeper situation. Reports indicate that the club are also monitoring other options, though no further details have been confirmed. The Blues’ reported interest in the Porto shot-stopper suggests Alonso is prioritising defensive security, particularly after last season’s disciplinary struggles—Chelsea finished bottom of the Premier League’s fair play table with 86 yellow cards and eight red cards, four more than any other club—which hinted at a squad lacking cohesion and maturity.

Henderson’s role in Alonso’s rebuilding project

The arrival of Jordan Henderson, confirmed by Chelsea in a club statement, has been framed as a calculated gamble rather than a headline-grabbing coup. Henderson’s move follows a productive season at Brentford, where he played a key role in their campaign, and his brief cameo at the World Cup with England—despite limited minutes—has kept him in the conversation for top-flight clubs. His signing, alongside Welbeck’s, signals a shift in Chelsea’s transfer policy, which had previously focused on younger players with resale value.

This pivot may reflect the constraints of the Premier League’s squad cost ratio (SCR), which has replaced profitability and sustainability rules (PSR). Chelsea’s average starting lineup age of 23.5 last season was the youngest in the league, but their disciplinary record—86 yellow cards and eight red cards—hinted at a squad lacking maturity. Alonso’s decision to bring in experienced heads like Henderson could be an attempt to address that imbalance, even if the short-term optics are unconventional.

Squad depth and Alonso’s adaptation under scrutiny

The Blues’ transfer activity this summer has been marked by contradictions. While Chelsea splashed cash on Henderson and Welbeck, reports suggest they have also been linked with a £60m star who has since rejected their approach, according to Vital Football. The club’s hierarchy has yet to clarify how these signings fit into Alonso’s long-term vision, particularly as pre-season tours in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Malaysia get underway.

Alonso’s task is further complicated by the club’s 46-player squad, a bloated roster that reflects Chelsea’s financial flexibility but also raises questions about squad cohesion. The manager’s reliance on Henderson—a player 13 years his senior—could be seen as a pragmatic move to embed his ideas, but it also risks sending mixed signals to younger talents. The club’s disciplinary issues last season, which included four more red cards than any other team, underscore the need for structural improvements beyond individual signings.

Chelsea’s transfer window has so far defied convention, blending high-profile arrivals with unexpected departures. The pursuit of Costa, if realised, would add another layer to Alonso’s evolving project, but the club’s ability to integrate these signings—and justify their inclusion—remains an open question. As pre-season begins, the focus will be on whether Alonso can turn a squad of disparate profiles into a cohesive unit, or if Chelsea’s summer spending will once again fall short of expectations.
