Papers: Delap & Neto move closer to Chelsea exit

Chelsea’s transfer strategy is shifting under new ownership, with two first-team players now closer to exits after months of speculation. Liam Delap and Pedro Neto have emerged as priorities for clubs outside the Premier League, as Nottingham Forest and Manchester City step up their pursuit of the duo. The developments follow a summer of uncertainty for the Blues, with manager Mauricio Pochettino yet to stamp his authority on the squad.

Delap’s future hinges on Forest’s ambition

Nottingham Forest have entered the race for Liam Delap, according to talkSPORT, as Chelsea look to recoup some of the £40m they paid for the striker last year. Delap, 23, has struggled to replicate his Championship form since his move to Stamford Bridge, managing just two goals in 24 appearances across all competitions. Forest’s interest signals a potential lifeline for Chelsea, who are under pressure to balance the books after a costly summer of incomings. The Reds have been active in the market, with a reported £15m bid for West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen rejected earlier this month.

Forest’s pursuit comes as Chelsea face renewed scrutiny over their transfer dealings. The club’s recent signings have drawn criticism, with Fernández jeered by fans during the Community Shield, highlighting the disconnect between the board’s spending and on-field expectations. Delap’s potential exit could provide a rare boost to Chelsea’s finances, but it would also underscore the lack of progress under Pochettino.

Neto’s exit route narrows to City or Saudi Arabia

Pedro Neto’s future is edging closer to a resolution, with Manchester City and Al Hilal emerging as the leading suitors. The 25-year-old winger has been a target for multiple clubs this summer, but City’s interest—reported by talkSPORT—positions them as the most credible option. Neto’s versatility and direct style make him an attractive proposition for Pep Guardiola, who is reshaping his squad after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.

Chelsea’s need to sell stems from their financial constraints, a theme echoed across the Premier League. Clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool have been more aggressive in the market, with the Gunners reportedly willing to pay £60m for Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen. Meanwhile, Liverpool have secured a boost in their pursuit of Bradley Barcola after Paris Saint-Germain signed Mika Godts, potentially lowering Barcola’s valuation. These moves highlight the widening gap between Chelsea’s cautious approach and their rivals’ ambition.

United’s academy pivot signals a cultural shift

Manchester United are adopting a more ruthless approach to their academy, with Harry Amass and Toby Collyer among the players available for transfer. The Red Devils’ strategy mirrors Chelsea’s recent sales, as they seek to monetise young talent amid financial pressures. United sold Radek Vitek to Middlesbrough for up to £14m in a deal featuring a 35% sell-on clause, a model they are now applying to other academy products.

The shift is part of a broader effort to match Chelsea and City’s commercial acumen. United’s historic reliance on youth has waned in recent years, with only a handful of academy graduates breaking into the first team. Michael Carrick’s appointment has revitalised the pathway, but the club’s financial demands may force further departures. As Carrick’s son, Jacey, progresses through the ranks, the balance between youth development and revenue generation will remain a delicate one.

Chelsea’s situation is further complicated by the ongoing uncertainty surrounding their ownership. With Delap and Neto’s futures hanging in the balance, Pochettino’s squad-building task grows harder by the day. The Blues’ next moves—whether in the transfer market or on the pitch—will define their trajectory for the coming season.
