Papers: Man Utd edging closer to winning race for Hall

Manchester United’s summer transfer business is gathering pace, with the club edging closer to securing one of the Premier League’s most coveted left-backs. According to the latest Sky Sports report, Lewis Hall has rejected a potential return to Chelsea, a decision that strengthens United’s hand in the race for the 22-year-old’s signature. The development comes as Erik ten Hag looks to bolster his defensive options before the new campaign, with the Dutchman’s side already active in the market. Hall, who has also featured as a defensive midfielder during his loan spells at Newcastle and Chelsea, would provide tactical flexibility that Ten Hag has prioritised in his recruitment.

Why Hall’s stance matters now

Hall’s refusal to consider a move back to Stamford Bridge is a significant setback for Chelsea, who had hoped to reunite the England youth international with his former club. The left-back’s stance now tilts the balance in United’s favour, with sources indicating that Ten Hag’s side are the “closest” to finalising a deal. While no agreement has been reached, the momentum has shifted decisively in Manchester. The 22-year-old’s decision to rule out a Chelsea return follows months of speculation linking him with a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge, where he has spent the past two seasons on loan from Chelsea.

This isn’t just about a single player, either. The broader context is Ten Hag’s need to address defensive frailties that have plagued United in recent seasons. Hall, capable of playing at left-back or in midfield, offers versatility—a quality that has become a hallmark of Ten Hag’s recruitment strategy. His arrival would also provide competition for Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia, both of whom have been criticised for inconsistency, particularly in high-pressing situations. Hall’s ability to play in a back three or four also aligns with Ten Hag’s preferred formations, where overlapping full-backs are crucial to the team’s buildup play.

The wider transfer landscape

United’s pursuit of Hall isn’t happening in isolation. The club is also monitoring other avenues, including a potential surprise move for Jack Grealish, according to the same Sky Sports report. Atletico Madrid are said to be considering a bid for the Manchester City outcast, though such a move would require a seismic shift in Grealish’s standing at the Etihad. For now, Hall remains the priority, with United’s hierarchy convinced that his profile fits Ten Hag’s system more closely than Grealish’s.

Elsewhere, the transfer window is heating up across Europe. Hull City are preparing to fend off interest from Rangers and Cardiff for Norwegian midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl, a player whose progressive passing and high work rate have drawn comparisons to Martin Ødegaard. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s winger Pedro Neto is among the names on Manchester City’s radar as they assemble a list of wing targets, with Pep Guardiola’s side seeking to add creativity to their frontline. These developments underscore the fluidity of the market, with clubs jostling for position before the August deadline, particularly as clubs seek to balance financial constraints with squad strengthening.

Tactical fit and next steps

If Hall does join United, his role would likely be as a first-choice left-back, with the flexibility to deputise in midfield if required. Ten Hag’s system demands full-backs who can progress the ball and contribute to buildup play, attributes Hall has demonstrated during his loan spells at Newcastle and Chelsea. His ability to play in a back three or four also aligns with Ten Hag’s preferred formations, where overlapping full-backs are crucial to the team’s buildup play. The Dutchman’s preference for a high defensive line means Hall’s comfort in stepping into midfield could be particularly valuable when United are pinned back by opposition pressure.

The next 48 hours could prove decisive. With Hall’s future now in United’s sights, the club will need to move swiftly to secure his signature before rival suitors—including Arsenal, who have been linked with Vinicius Jr—react. Ten Hag’s side have already shown promise in pre-season, with Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho shining in a midfield reshuffle that has hinted at a more fluid approach. A defensive upgrade would further tighten their squad balance ahead of a challenging Premier League campaign, where United will face the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal in the opening weeks.

For United, the Hall pursuit is more than a transfer story—it’s a statement of intent. After a turbulent season, Ten Hag is reshaping his squad with purpose, and Hall’s arrival would signal a clear step forward. The club’s hierarchy has made it clear that defensive reinforcements are a priority, and Hall’s profile represents the kind of modern full-back Ten Hag has repeatedly highlighted as essential to his project. Whether the deal is completed before the deadline remains uncertain, but the direction of travel is now unmistakable.
