Papers: Two PL clubs interested in Arsenal’s Jesus

Arsenal’s January transfer window is shaping up to be a pivot point, not just for their squad but for the Premier League’s wider power balance. Two clubs have emerged with concrete interest in Gabriel Jesus, while Atletico Madrid’s stance on Julian Alvarez has shifted—creating a domino effect that could reshape the Gunners’ attacking options before the window slams shut.

Premier League rivals circle for Jesus

Everton and Ipswich have fielded enquiries for Gabriel Jesus, according to Sky Sports. The Brazilian’s future in north London has been under scrutiny since Arsenal’s summer recruitment drive, and the interest from two clubs with contrasting ambitions signals a potential exit. Everton, under fresh ownership and with a clear plan, see Jesus as a ready-made Premier League striker who can elevate their attack. Ipswich, meanwhile, are plotting a swift return to the top flight and view the 28-year-old as a proven Premier League asset who could lead their line.

The enquiries come as Arsenal weigh up a move for Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi, a player who has impressed in the Championship with his physicality and finishing. The Gunners’ interest in Kroupi suggests they are weighing up a move—whether that’s Jesus leaving or securing Kroupi as a direct replacement. The next 72 hours will be decisive: will Jesus force a move, or will Arsenal move first to secure Kroupi?

Alvarez saga takes another twist

Atletico Madrid have finally accepted the inevitable: Julian Alvarez is leaving. But not to Barcelona—not yet. Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reports that Atletico have softened their stance and are now open to selling Alvarez, though only under strict conditions. The club’s €500 million release clause remains non-negotiable, a figure so inflated it effectively prices out all but the wealthiest suitors.

Arsenal have been linked with a potential swap involving Viktor Gyokeres, a move that would allow Atletico to recoup some value while satisfying their need to offload Alvarez. The player’s preference, however, remains Barcelona—his stated “dream” destination. His public transfer request at the World Cup and subsequent refusal to return to Manchester City in 2024 underscored his determination. Yet Simeone’s stubbornness and the release clause’s sheer scale mean Arsenal may need to get creative if they are to land the Argentina international. The next 48 hours could determine whether Alvarez’s dream becomes a reality—or whether he remains in Madrid for another season.

Arsenal’s squad puzzle deepens

The uncertainty surrounding Jesus and Alvarez exposes a broader issue: Arsenal’s attacking depth is under strain. With Eddie Nketiah yet to establish himself as a consistent starter and Kieran Tierney’s future clouded by injury, the club’s reliance on a small group of players is becoming unsustainable. The Gunners’ transfer strategy this month will define their trajectory for the rest of the season—whether they gamble on a high-risk Alvarez deal or opt for pragmatic replacements like Kroupi.

Meanwhile, the wider Premier League transfer market is in flux. Virgil van Dijk has reportedly told Liverpool teammates not up for the challenge this season to leave, a rare public admission of internal dissatisfaction. At Manchester United, Willy Kambwala’s move to Como edges closer, freeing up funds for a potential January revival. These shifts create opportunities, but for Arsenal, the clock is ticking. Do they act decisively to secure Alvarez, or do they prepare for life without Jesus?

One thing is clear: Arsenal cannot afford to stand still. The next 72 hours will reveal whether Mikel Arteta’s side are building for the future or scrambling to keep pace. The Premier League waits for no one—and neither do the clubs circling their players.
