Pep’s prediction correct as Rodri returns to dominant best

Pep Guardiola’s October prediction about Rodri’s World Cup return has been vindicated in emphatic fashion. The Manchester City midfielder, who endured a disjointed domestic season after his ACL injury, has recaptured his peak form just when it mattered most. Six consecutive wins later, Spain’s captain is once again the metronome at the heart of their campaign, proving that his manager’s faith was never misplaced.

From scepticism to supremacy

The opening fixture against Cape Verde exposed Rodri to criticism for perceived sluggishness, with some questioning whether his influence had waned. Luis de la Fuente dismissed such claims outright, labelling them “incredibly insulting” and defending Rodri as “the best player in the world.” Five weeks on, the numbers and performances speak for themselves. Spain’s run to the final has been built on control, and Rodri has been the architect of it all.

The semi-final against France underscored his importance. While the team’s collective resilience shone through, it was Rodri who dictated the tempo, ensuring Spain’s midfield dominance over a star-studded opponent. His ability to bring clarity and balance has been the difference, silencing doubts with every composed pass and timely intervention.

The weight of expectation

Rodri’s journey to this stage has not been straightforward. A difficult domestic campaign following his injury recovery saw him struggle to rediscover his rhythm. Yet Guardiola’s assessment in October—that Rodri would peak at the World Cup—has proven prescient. “Do you know when Rodri will be good?” the City manager asked. “At the World Cup with Spain. At the World Cup he will be the best Rodri.”

Spain’s strength lies in their unity, but Rodri’s return to dominance has elevated the entire team. His vision and control have been pivotal in transitions, while his positional awareness has allowed teammates to flourish. The final against Argentina awaits, but the midfielder’s influence has already cemented his status as the tournament’s standout performer.

Tactical clarity under pressure

Spain’s system thrives on possession and positional interchange, and Rodri’s recovery has restored the necessary rhythm. His ability to slow or accelerate play as required has neutralised opponents, particularly in high-stakes moments. Against France, his midfield partnership ensured France’s creative threats were consistently nullified, a testament to his reading of the game.

The contrast with his early struggles is stark. Where critics saw hesitation, there is now decisive action. Where they questioned his tempo, there is now relentless control. Rodri’s resurgence is not just about individual brilliance but the perfect alignment of form and timing—exactly as Guardiola foresaw.

Sunday’s final represents the ultimate validation. Rodri’s journey from doubt to dominance encapsulates Spain’s campaign: a collective effort, but one powered by a midfielder operating at the peak of his powers. The World Cup has delivered its most compelling narrative, and Rodri is at its centre.
