Pressure grows on FIFA chief Infantino to resign as FA member pulls support

The Football Association of Wales has become the first national football body to withdraw its backing for Gianni Infantino’s re-election as FIFA president in March, escalating a crisis that began when his plan to “sell off” the World Cup was exposed and then abandoned.

What happened and why it matters now

The FAW confirmed it has written to FIFA to withdraw support for Infantino’s candidacy for the 2027–2031 term, citing “recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement.” The association stated that Infantino “has lost the confidence of the FAW to remain at the helm of world football,” adding that “failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept.”

The move follows Infantino’s abrupt U-turn on proposals to create a private company, open to outside investment, to run FIFA’s marquee competitions and raise billions. The plan was to be led by Joshua Kushner, brother-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, but it was revealed by the media before many FIFA officials were informed. The backlash was immediate: UEFA announced a boycott of FIFA competitions until the plans were scrapped, while CONCACAF joined the criticism. Key advisers to Infantino resigned in protest, deepening the reputational damage.

Infantino’s re-election bid, once considered a formality, now faces its first serious institutional challenge. The FAW’s decision signals that the scandal has crossed a threshold, turning private disquiet into public defiance. With Infantino’s term due to end in March, the pressure is mounting on him to address the governance failures that have eroded trust across the football world.

How the crisis unfolded and who is involved

The sequence began when reports surfaced of a plan to transfer control of FIFA’s commercial rights to a private entity, a move critics argued would erode the organisation’s independence and prioritise profit over the sport. The proposal’s association with Kushner, a prominent Trump ally, intensified scrutiny, raising concerns about political influence in football governance.

UEFA’s swift response—pledging to boycott FIFA competitions—sent a clear signal that European football would not tolerate the plan. CONCACAF, the North American confederation, followed with criticism, while FIFA insiders described the episode as a “self-inflicted wound” that damaged the organisation’s credibility. Infantino’s subsequent retreat did little to restore confidence; instead, it reinforced perceptions of poor judgment and opaque decision-making.

The FAW’s withdrawal of support is the first formal defection among FIFA’s member associations, but it is unlikely to be the last. Other British football bodies are reviewing their positions, and the broader football community is watching closely. The episode has exposed fractures within FIFA’s leadership and raised questions about whether Infantino can regain the trust of the game’s stakeholders.

What comes next and why it could define Infantino’s legacy

Infantino’s re-election bid now hinges on damage control. He must demonstrate tangible reforms—transparent governance, meaningful consultation with member associations, and a clear commitment to football’s best interests—if he hopes to retain support. The FAW’s stance suggests that symbolic concessions will not suffice; structural changes are required to rebuild confidence.

The timing is critical. With FIFA’s next presidential election just months away, the organisation cannot afford prolonged instability. The FAW’s letter underscores a broader unease: that Infantino’s leadership has prioritised short-term financial gains over the long-term health of the sport. If other associations follow suit, Infantino’s re-election could become untenable, forcing an early reckoning.

For now, the focus shifts to FIFA’s response. Will Infantino use the interregnum to implement genuine reforms, or will the crisis deepen, culminating in a leadership vacuum? The FAW’s decision has raised the stakes, turning a governance scandal into a test of whether FIFA can still govern itself—or whether the game’s future will be shaped by forces beyond its control.
