Rayif fancied to take Prix Jacques Le Marois prize

Rayif emerges as Prix Jacques Le Marois favourite after strong panel backing

The Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville on Sunday has quickly taken shape as a two-horse race after Francis-Henri Graffard’s Rayif received emphatic support from the Weekend Winners panel. The three-year-old, fresh from victory in the French 2000 Guineas, heads the betting at Aidan O’Brien’s Precise, with both riders booked and connections confident of a Group 1 repeat. The stage is set for a clash between youthful promise and seasoned experience when the mile contest gets under way.

Why Rayif’s credentials stand out ahead of Deauville

Declan Rix opened the betting market by backing Rayif, arguing the colt will relish the return to a mile after his fifth-place finish in the Prix Jean Prat over seven furlongs. “He won the French 2000 Guineas impressively with cut under foot and if he bounces back, on that run he will be a dangerous challenger,” Rix said. Kate Tracey echoed the view, insisting the colt can rediscover his Guineas form after a troubled trip at his previous start. “This is the first race he has had this season in which he has had this target, without any interruptions this time,” she noted.

The surface at Deauville is expected to be quicker than the ground on which Rayif triumphed in the French Classic, a factor Tracey believes will work in his favour. “The surface is quick—which is the opposite of his Guineas win—but connections have said they are wanting better ground so this should be in his favour,” she added. With Ryan Moore in the saddle for Precise and a clear tactical plan on the cards, the stage is set for a tactical duel that could define the season’s middle-distance division.

Precise carries O’Brien’s hopes after creditable defeat

While Rayif commands the headlines, Aidan O’Brien’s Precise remains the market leader and the stable’s best chance to secure a second consecutive Prix Jacques Le Marois. The filly, a typical O’Brien three-year-old in terms of campaigning, ran creditably behind Blue Bolt in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville last time out. Sam Boswell highlighted her consistency but flagged concerns over quick turnarounds, a theme that has dogged the yard’s recent runners. “I thought Precise was interesting in here,” Boswell said. “She has been a typical Aidan O’Brien three-year-old filly who is battle-hardened and was campaigned strongly this year.”

The British challenge will be led by Zeus Olympios and More Thunder, while Japan’s Sixpence and Strauss add international intrigue. Yet the race’s narrative has already been shaped by Rayif’s rise and Precise’s resilience, ensuring Sunday’s renewal delivers more than just another Group 1 contest.

Tactical chessboard: pace, position and bounce-backs

The Prix Jacques Le Maroi’s tactical landscape hinges on two variables: the early pace and Rayif’s ability to recover ground. Rix pointed to the “plenty of pace on offer” in the field, suggesting Rayif can sit midfield before unleashing a late run. Tracey’s optimism about the quicker ground hints at a horse primed to reproduce his Guineas acceleration, while Boswell’s caution over Precise’s workload underscores the importance of freshness. With Moore’s experience and O’Brien’s tactical nous in play, the race could hinge on which horse adapts quickest to Deauville’s unique demands.

What comes next: titles, trends and the road to Longchamp

Beyond the prize money and prestige, the Jacques Le Marois serves as a springboard for autumn targets. A Rayif victory would cement his status as Europe’s leading three-year-old miler, while a Precise win would underline O’Brien’s Group 1 mastery. The panel’s backing of Rayif signals a changing of the guard, but the field’s depth—from British challengers to Japanese raiders—ensures no outcome is preordained. One thing is certain: after a summer of near-misses and narrow defeats, Sunday’s race at Deauville will reveal which horse has truly arrived.
