Rebel’s Romance proves popular winner at Newmarket

Rebel’s Romance returned to Newmarket on Thursday to deliver a popular victory in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes, reinforcing his reputation as one of Charlie Appleby’s most reliable performers. The eight-year-old, a global star with wins in Dubai, Hong Kong and Bahrain, led a 1-2 for Godolphin as he saw off a late challenge from stablemate Arabian Crown to secure a half-length triumph at odds of 8-11. The result underlined both the horse’s enduring class and Appleby’s knack for managing a veteran campaigner who still relishes the big occasion.

A rare homecoming for a world-beater

Rebel’s Romance’s first run since February came on familiar ground, yet the Newmarket track had not seen the best of him before. His 2022 debut on turf ended in a maiden-breaking victory in the Fred Archer Stakes, a race that Appleby now cites as the moment the horse revealed his aptitude beyond dirt. Thursday’s success was therefore a homecoming in more ways than one, a chance for Newmarket to witness the eight-year-old at his most composed under the gaze of his most loyal admirers.

The field assembled for the Group 2 contest included no shortage of challengers, but none could match Rebel’s Romance’s late surge. After Arabian Crown briefly seized the advantage inside the final furlong, William Buick guided the favourite back to the front, his whip coming into play as the crowd roared him home. The margin may have been narrow, yet the manner of the win—after a winter spent in Dubai and spring in Bahrain—sent a clear signal that the horse remains in fine fettle.

Appleby’s gamble pays off

Appleby admitted to a moment of unease when James Doyle’s mount moved past Rebel’s Romance, but the trainer’s faith in his horse was never misplaced. “When Doyler took a length or two out of him I thought ‘this wasn’t in the script’,” Appleby reflected, “but it was very similar to a bit of work he had here a few weeks ago when he was just going through the gears.” The comparison to training gallops underscored how Appleby trusts Rebel’s Romance to produce when it matters, even when the script calls for a late flourish rather than a canter.

The trainer also pushed back against suggestions that the horse’s campaign should be curtailed. “He’ll tell us the day that he doesn’t want to do it anymore,” Appleby said, “and he showed today that he still wants it.” That philosophy—letting the horse dictate his own retirement—has defined Rebel’s Romance’s career, from his Breeders’ Cup Turf victory to his latest Group 2 triumph. Appleby’s refusal to overwork the veteran, coupled with a light campaign of just two runs in five months, appears to have kept the spark alive.

What next for a horse who still has fire?

With the Breeders’ Cup Turf looming as a tantalising target, Appleby left the door ajar for another tilt at America’s richest grass race. “Of course we’d love to go there,” he conceded, though he stopped short of confirming a definite plan. The horse’s 8-1 ante-post price with Paddy Power suggests bookmakers are already factoring in his participation, yet Appleby’s caution is understandable. Rebel’s Romance may be eight, but he remains a horse who “charges the door down” when denied a gallop, a trait that could yet dictate his future.

The Princess of Wales’s Stakes, traditionally a stepping stone to autumn prizes, now looks like a formality rather than a peak. For Godolphin, the 1-2 finish underlined the strength of their late-season squad, while for Rebel’s Romance it was a reminder that home soil can still bring out the best. The Newmarket faithful, who have watched him mature from a precocious maiden to a global champion, will hope this is not his final bow.
