Romero to Atletico: Spurs’ captain exodus continues

Tottenham Hotspur’s captaincy carousel spins on. Cristian Romero, the Argentina international who led Spurs through their Premier League relegation scrap last season, is on the brink of a £34.2m switch to Atlético Madrid after the two clubs agreed terms on Wednesday night. The deal includes a 15% sell-on clause and caps another summer of exits from a club whose defensive spine is being dismantled piece by piece.

Spurs’ defensive haemorrhage gathers pace

Romero’s departure follows the £50m sale of teenage centre-back Luka Vuskovic to Brighton, a fee Spurs will struggle to match for a player of Romero’s experience and pedigree. The Argentine, 28, has made 124 appearances since arriving from Juventus in 2021, scoring 12 goals and collecting four red cards in the Premier League—two of them in the relegation fight of 2025-26. His exit leaves Spurs with a gaping void in defence just months after they splashed out on Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, a pair of defenders who have yet to prove they can shoulder the burden alone.

Romero’s impending move underscores the financial tightrope Spurs are walking. The club’s willingness to accept a fee below what they secured for a teenager reflects both the urgency to balance the books and the erosion of leverage in negotiations. Atlético’s long-standing interest finally prevailed, brushing aside interest from Inter Milan and Arsenal, the latter of which had been a reported destination before Romero’s preference for Madrid became clear.

North London’s shifting power balance

The captaincy exodus is not just about personnel; it reshapes the hierarchy in north London. Romero’s potential move to Atlético follows months of speculation over his future, including reports that he was prepared to watch his boyhood club Belgrano contest the Argentina Primera División Apertura final instead of Spurs’ must-win clash with Everton. He did ultimately attend the season finale, a 1-0 survival triumph that spared Spurs from the drop, but the episode highlighted the fractures between player and club.

Romero’s exit also reignites questions over Spurs’ ability to retain their remaining stars amid financial uncertainty. The club’s stance on not allowing him to join Arsenal—reported in Paper Talk coverage—suggests a hardening of resolve to keep him in the fold, yet the reality of a £34.2m bid from a rival with a clear project has forced their hand. The timing, with the transfer window still open, leaves Spurs with a defensive crisis to address before the window slams shut.

Atlético’s gain, Spurs’ gamble

For Atlético, Romero represents a calculated upgrade at the heart of Diego Simeone’s defence. The Argentine brings Serie A-winning experience, a physical presence, and Champions League pedigree—qualities that align with Simeone’s blueprint. The inclusion of a sell-on clause in the deal also grants Atlético a financial safety net should they opt to move him on in future.

Spurs, meanwhile, are left to rebuild around a defence that has lost two of its most prominent figures in three months. The club’s defensive record last season—conceding 69 goals—was the worst in the division, and Romero’s absence will test the adaptability of Van Hecke and Senesi. Their arrivals were framed as long-term solutions, but the Romero sale suggests Spurs are prioritising short-term financial flexibility over squad stability.

The transfer also raises the spectre of further departures. With Romero’s contract running until 2029, Spurs’ decision to cash in now, rather than gamble on a higher fee later, signals a lack of confidence in their ability to retain top talent. The club’s hierarchy will hope the arrivals of Van Hecke and Senesi can steady the ship, but the loss of a captain who has started 98 of his last 100 league games for Spurs is a body blow.

Romero’s move to Atlético is more than a transfer; it’s a statement of intent from a club that sees Spurs as a stepping stone rather than a destination. For Tottenham, it’s another reminder that their defensive crisis is far from over—and that their captaincy carousel may yet claim more names before the window closes.
