Soccer, dust, dreams – China Daily

China’s football landscape is shifting beneath the weight of ambition and dust. The national team’s latest campaign, whatever its immediate result, is less about the scoreboard than the broader reckoning it forces. The game here is no longer just a sport; it’s a mirror held up to national pride, economic strategy, and the enduring dream of a nation that has poured billions into stadiums, academies, and foreign stars. Yet the pitch remains stubbornly uneven. The question isn’t whether progress is visible—it’s whether it’s deep enough to survive the next cycle of disappointment.

Dust on the Pitch, Ambition in the Stands

The dust kicked up by the national team’s recent matches isn’t just the dry earth of training grounds. It’s the residue of years of investment that hasn’t yet translated into consistent results. In the team’s most recent fixture—a 1-1 draw against Thailand in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on 16 November 2024—the disappointment wasn’t in the scoreline alone, but in the moments when individual brilliance—flashes of skill in midfield from players like Wu Lei or sharp finishing in attack from youngster Wang Zhen’ao—failed to cohere under pressure. The team’s shape frayed in the final third, a recurring flaw that suggests tactical work remains as urgent as player development. Against Thailand, China dominated possession but struggled to convert chances, a pattern that has persisted across multiple qualifiers.

Off the field, the infrastructure tells a different story. New training facilities gleam under floodlights in provincial capitals like Chengdu and Qingdao, and youth academies now operate under stricter licensing rules introduced in 2023. But the gap between promise and performance persists. The national team’s struggles are no longer a surprise; they’re a pattern. And patterns, once accepted, become harder to break.

Dreams Delayed, Not Denied

For a generation raised on the promise of football as a ladder to global relevance, the delay feels personal. The 2026 World Cup qualifiers loom, and the margin for error is shrinking. The squad’s latest draw came after a string of narrow wins that masked deeper issues: a lack of cohesion, a midfield over-reliant on veteran playmaker Xie Pengfei, and a defense prone to lapses in concentration, as seen in the 2-2 draw with Singapore in October. The players know the stakes. So do the fans in packed stadiums, where chants still rise despite the frustration.

The government’s push to professionalize the domestic league has yielded uneven results. Clubs with state backing splurge on marquee foreign signings like Brazilian striker Paulinho at Shandong Taishan, but the domestic talent pipeline remains clogged. The academies churn out technically gifted players such as 19-year-old midfielder Jiang Zhexuan, yet few emerge ready for the physicality of top-level international football. The disconnect is glaring: China’s Super League is one of the richest in Asia, ranked fifth in continental spending, but its national team lags behind neighbors like Japan and South Korea, who have consistently outperformed in recent AFC competitions.

What Comes Next

The path forward is clear in theory but treacherous in practice. The federation has tightened its grip on club spending, capping foreign player registrations at five per match and mandating youth minutes in matchday squads under its 2024 “Homegrown First” policy. The theory is sound: prioritize homegrown talent, reduce reliance on imports, and build from the ground up. But theory doesn’t win games. The next cycle of the national team will hinge on whether the current crop of youngsters—those who’ve trained under the new regime—can step up when the moment demands it. The pressure is on the shoulders of players like 21-year-old defender Zhu Chenjie, who’ve shown glimpses of class but lack the consistency to anchor a team in transition.

Tactically, the federation’s recent appointment of Spanish coach Sergio Batista in June 2024 was meant to bridge the gap. Early signs suggest a system that values pressing and quick transitions, but translating that into match-winning performances requires more than drills. It requires belief. The players must trust the system as much as the system trusts them. That trust is fragile, built in training sessions and tested in the cauldron of competitive football, as evidenced by the team’s inability to hold leads in recent qualifiers.

The dust on the pitch will settle. The dreams, for now, remain suspended in the air. China’s football project is a work in progress, one that demands patience but cannot afford complacency. The next set of qualifiers—starting with the home match against Vietnam on 21 March 2025—will reveal whether the dust is the settling of old foundations—or the first sign of erosion.
