Spain ease past Austria and are growing into this World Cup

Spain’s march toward the World Cup round of 16 began with methodical efficiency in Los Angeles, where a 3-0 victory over Austria confirmed their place in the next stage and underlined their growing confidence at this tournament. A crowd of 70,492 at SoFi Stadium watched as Luis de la Fuente’s side extended their unbeaten run in competitive internationals to 34 games within 90 minutes, all while keeping a clean sheet for the second consecutive match.

Spain’s defensive solidity remains the foundation

From the opening whistle, Spain prioritised structure over spectacle, absorbing pressure before breaking with purpose. Austria, who had reached this stage on the back of a stoppage-time winner against Algeria, showed early intent but were repeatedly thwarted by a Spanish rearguard marshalled by Aymeric Laporte and Robin Le Normand. The only early setback came when Marc Cucurella’s effort was disallowed for a challenge on the goalkeeper, a decision that briefly disrupted Spain’s rhythm but did little to derail their game plan. The VAR review upheld the call after a lengthy delay, a moment that briefly shifted momentum before Spain reasserted control.

By the 37th minute, that plan had a goal to hang on to. Mikel Oyarzabal, introduced as a second-half substitute in the group stage, broke the deadlock with a composed finish after latching onto a through ball from Rodri. The strike was a reminder of Spain’s ability to punish defensive lapses, even if the build-up lacked the fluidity that had been missing in their group-stage draw with Cape Verde. Austria responded with a half-chance for Sasa Kalajdzic, whose first-time header drifted over the bar, but Spain’s defensive discipline ensured no further alarms.

Oyarzabal’s double seals Austria’s fate

Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s advantage in the 66th minute, rising unmarked at the far post to head in a cross from Bryan Gil Baena. The goal exposed Austria’s vulnerability in aerial duels and left their midfield, typically so effective in transition, chasing shadows. With the game effectively over, Oyarzabal completed his brace in the 89th minute, tapping in from Cucurella’s cutback to confirm Spain’s control. The timing of the goals—two in the final 23 minutes—suggested a side growing into its rhythm rather than imposing it from the start, but the clinical finish underscored their tournament pedigree.

Ralf Rangnick’s side, who had relied on late drama to edge past Algeria, found no such reprieve in California. Kalajdzic’s late header, their only real chance of the second half, sailed over the crossbar, a microcosm of a team that had run out of ideas. Spain, by contrast, looked every inch the tournament’s defending European champions, even if their group-stage display had raised eyebrows.

What comes next: a clash of heavyweights

Spain’s next opponent will be decided later on Friday, with Portugal and Croatia set to battle for top spot in Group E. A win for either would set up a blockbuster tie, but Spain’s form—unbeaten in 34 competitive games and conceding only once in open play this tournament—suggests they are peaking at the right time. De la Fuente’s side have shown the capacity to grind out results when needed, even if their attacking fluency has not yet reached the heights of previous generations.

For now, the focus remains on consolidation. With Lamine Yamal providing glimpses of his prodigious talent and a defence that has yet to concede a goal in the knockout phase, Spain are gradually shedding the cautious label attached to them after their group-stage stutter. The real test awaits, but their progress so far carries a clear message: this is a team learning to win in different ways. If they can maintain this balance between defensive steel and attacking potential, the latter stages of this World Cup could belong to them.
