Spence to Inter: Spurs’ £25.6m exit finally takes shape

Tottenham’s defensive reshuffle is taking shape, but not in the way supporters hoped. The club are on the brink of accepting a £25.6 million offer from Inter Milan for Djed Spence, a deal that would crystallise the right-back’s exit after a prolonged transfer saga and leave Spurs exposed at the back once again.

Spence’s future sealed as Inter close in

Inter Milan have intensified their pursuit of Spence this week, with a total package worth up to £30 million now considered sufficient to conclude the transfer. Tottenham are in active talks over the deal, and while no agreement has been finalised, the clubs are understood to be nearing a resolution. Spence’s opportunities at Spurs have narrowed significantly due to competition from Destiny Udogie and Andy Robertson for the left-back berth, while Pedro Porro remains the established first choice on the right.

Inter’s interest stems from their need for a versatile defensive option capable of playing as a wing-back, a profile that aligns closely with Spence’s attributes. Their pursuit follows a summer of frustration in the transfer market, having failed to secure Moussa Diaby from Al Ittihad. The imminent arrival of Spence would mark Inter’s latest attempt to strengthen Simone Inzaghi’s squad before the European campaign intensifies.

Spurs’ defensive dilemma laid bare

Spence’s departure would leave a tangible gap in Tottenham’s defensive options, particularly given the club’s ongoing struggles to balance ambition with pragmatism in the transfer market. Spurs have already committed over £237 million this summer, breaking their transfer record twice with the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton for £52 million, while free agents Martin Dubravka, Robertson, and Marcos Senesi have also been added. Yet despite the outlay, questions persist over whether these signings address the team’s structural weaknesses.

Roberto De Zerbi, now in his second season at Spurs, has insisted the club is “not finished” in the transfer market, framing the current phase as a transitional period rather than a completed rebuild. “In the transfer market, we have not finished yet with the players who will arrive,” he told the Men in Blazers Network. “We are looking forward to start another season with, I don’t know, different ambitions, but with different results.” His comments underscore a franchise caught between financial restraint and the urgent need to compete domestically.

Inter’s gain, Spurs’ gamble

For Inter, Spence represents a pragmatic solution to a positional need that has persisted in their defensive structure. The £25.6 million fee—substantially above Spurs’ initial valuation—reflects Inter’s willingness to pay a premium for a player who can operate in multiple defensive roles. Their pursuit also signals a shift in strategy under Inzaghi, who has prioritised versatility in recruitment this summer.

At Spurs, the sale would compound the sense of drift that has characterised their summer. Despite the high-profile arrivals, the squad remains unbalanced, with no clear resolution to the defensive instability that has plagued them for years. The exit of Spence, a player who offered competition to Porro and a potential long-term option, would leave a tangible gap—one that no amount of transfer spending can immediately fill.

Spurs’ defensive frailties are no longer abstract concerns; they are structural. The club’s failure to address them this summer, even as they splashed record fees, suggests a disconnect between ambition and execution. With Spence’s sale imminent, the next domino may already be in motion—whether it’s another departure or a belated reinforcement. Either way, the window to reshape this squad is closing fast.
