The Vinicius Junior dream is over – so what do Arsenal do now?

Arsenal’s summer transfer strategy has suffered a double blow that leaves Mikel Arteta’s squad fundamentally altered. First, Chelsea pipped them to Morgan Rogers, paying a British-record £117m for the Aston Villa forward after the 21-year-old rejected Arsenal’s late advances. Then, Vinicius Junior committed to Real Madrid until 2032, ending Arsenal’s pursuit despite their attempts to convince the Brazilian to swap the Santiago Bernabéu for the Emirates. With both headline targets off the table within 48 hours, the Gunners’ carefully constructed plans have unravelled—leaving Andrea Berta’s “ducks in a row” approach in tatters.

What went wrong this summer

The Gunners’ transfer blueprint hinged on securing a premium left-sided attacker to address a glaring positional weakness. Leandro Trossard’s sale to Besiktas in July—just days after Arsenal had valued him at £50m—was the clearest indication of the club’s dissatisfaction with the position. Gabriel Martinelli’s inconsistent displays in the role last season, where he managed just 5 goals and 3 assists in all competitions, only reinforced the need for a genuine upgrade. Christos Tzolis arrived from Club Brugge for a reported £25m, but the Greek international’s solitary senior season in Belgium (7 goals in 28 league games) offers little reassurance about his readiness for Champions League football.

Vinicius, Arsenal’s marquee target, was never a realistic prospect despite the club’s willingness to include Kai Havertz in part-exchange deals. Real Madrid’s refusal to entertain any offers—even after Arsenal reportedly increased their valuation of the Brazilian to £180m—made his move to north London improbable from the outset. His new contract, running until 2032 with a release clause set at €1bn, removes any lingering doubt about his future at the Bernabéu. Meanwhile, Rogers’ switch to Chelsea for a fee that smashes the previous British record (surpassing Jack Grealish’s £100m) leaves Arsenal without their original first-choice replacement. The club’s much-vaunted strategy of lining up multiple deals per position has been disrupted twice in as many weeks, forcing an emergency pivot.

Where Arsenal turn next

Arteta has made no secret of his ambition to sign a winger capable of stretching defences and providing a consistent goal threat. Bruno Guimaraes’ impending £75m arrival from Newcastle plugs a midfield void, but the frontline remains incomplete. Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola has emerged as a primary alternative, with Liverpool also circling. The Frenchman’s direct style and Premier League experience (he scored twice in 12 appearances during a loan at Leeds in 2023-24) make him a viable Plan B, though PSG’s reported £80m valuation may test Arsenal’s resolve. Arteta’s insistence on “attacking every title” suggests he won’t settle for a lateral move.

Riccardo Calafiori, the club’s new left-back, has already stressed the importance of top-level signings, telling reporters this week: “We need these kind of players to compete at the highest level.” Arteta framed the summer as pivotal for competing on multiple fronts, with the manager’s pre-season struggles—evident in a sloppy 2-1 loss to Real Betis—underlining the need for surgical precision in the transfer market. If Barcola proves too costly, other options reportedly include Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche (who scored 8 goals and provided 7 assists in Ligue 1 last season) and Atalanta’s Rafael Leão, though none carry Vinicius’ star power or directness.

The midfield pivot arrives, but the puzzle isn’t solved

Guimaraes’ switch from Newcastle is a statement of intent, arriving as the Magpies lose another key asset following the departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. His ability to dictate tempo, break lines with progressive carries, and contribute defensively makes him a natural fit for Arteta’s system. However, the midfield upgrade doesn’t address Arsenal’s creative deficit. Last season, Martinelli (10 goals, 6 assists) and Trossard (8 goals, 5 assists before his sale) were the only wingers to reach double figures in goal contributions, while Havertz’s central role limited his impact. Without a winger who can consistently deliver crosses (Arsenal ranked 12th in Premier League crosses last term) or cut inside to score, the Gunners risk repeating last season’s over-reliance on internal solutions.

The friendly against Real Betis exposed further gaps in Arsenal’s cohesion, particularly in transition where Guimaraes’ arrival may not immediately solve the issue. The 2-1 defeat highlighted how Arsenal’s high press can be bypassed when opponents bypass midfield, a problem that a world-class winger could mitigate by pinning back full-backs. Yet the club’s transfer committee must now decide whether to chase Barcola at a premium or gamble on a cheaper, less proven option. Monaco’s Takumi Minamino (£35m release clause) and Udinese’s Destiny Udogie (£40m) have also been linked, but neither offers the same profile as Vinicius.

Arsenal’s window is narrowing, and the pressure is mounting. Vinicius is gone, Rogers is at Chelsea, and Guimaraes—while a significant coup—doesn’t solve the creative void. Arteta’s side remains title contenders on paper, but the squad’s balance is still skewed. If Barcola or another attacker doesn’t arrive within the next fortnight, the Gunners may find themselves relying on internal improvements—such as Martin Ødegaard rediscovering his form or Declan Rice adding more goals from midfield—rather than new signings to close the gap to Manchester City.
