Today on Sky Sports Racing: Ascot stages Shergar Cup meeting

Saturday’s racing calendar delivers a double-header of top-tier Flat action, with the Shergar Cup at Ascot and a competitive card at Lingfield Park both live on Sky Sports Racing from 1.35pm. The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile at Ascot headlines the afternoon, featuring a rematch between Ebt’s Guard and Cerulean Bay, while the opening Dash and Classic add further intrigue to a meeting that blends established stars with rising talent.

A clash of proven performers in the Shergar Cup Mile

The closing Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile pits two consistent performers against a field of ten, with Ebt’s Guard bidding to retain his crown. Trained by William Muir and Chris Grassick, the six-year-old has shown a clear affinity for Ascot, finishing placed in the Royal Hunt Cup and Balmoral Handicap in recent starts. His last outing at Goodwood ended in trouble in running, but the Mile’s undulating contours and strong finishing bias should suit a horse with his profile.

Cerulean Bay, ridden by Jamie Melham, tops the weights and arrives off a second-place finish at Goodwood last weekend. A one-pound rise in mark reflects his upward trajectory, and trainer David O’Meara will expect a bold effort. The mile trip has suited him before, and with a clean run, he can push Ebt’s Guard all the way.

Ozat and Bullet Point, both carrying high handicaps, loom as potential spoilers. Their mark adjustments suggest they are well handicapped for the contest, and if either can settle in front, they could force the pace and test the front-runners.

The Dash and Classic set the tone early and late

The afternoon begins with the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash, where Tuco Salamanca and Bolo Neighs headline a competitive field. Bolo Neighs, trained by Ralph Beckett, has run well at Ascot on his last two starts and, if breaking on terms, should hit the frame under Christophe Lemaire. Tuco Salamanca, partnered by Jerry Chau for the new Hong Kong team, arrives as a live contender after a strong recent run.

Spartan Arrow, ridden by Ryan Moore, has been dropped in weight following a solid effort at Goodwood and could benefit from a more patient ride. The Dash often rewards early speed, but Moore’s tactical nous means the four-year-old cannot be discounted.

The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic closes the Ascot programme, and Saffie Osborne takes the ride on Hoseki, who bids for a four-timer under William Haggas. A daughter of Saxon Warrior, Hoseki has won all three starts this season, including over this course and distance last month. A five-pound rise in the weights reflects her progress, but the Classic’s stamina test over a mile and a quarter may suit her.

Lingfield Park delivers a competitive curtain-raiser

While Ascot commands the spotlight, Lingfield Park offers a parallel card of Flat racing from 1.35pm. The programme features a mix of handicaps and conditions races, with no single standout race but plenty of scope for each-way betting and each-way accumulators. The track’s all-weather surface ensures reliable going, and trainers will have targeted specific races with fitness and form in mind.

The absence of headline names at Lingfield contrasts with the Shergar Cup’s star-studded line-up, but competitive fields and sharp handicaps often produce unexpected results. Punters seeking value may find it here, particularly in races where the market has not fully accounted for recent course and distance form.

Saturday’s racing delivers a compelling blend of star power and tactical depth. At Ascot, the Shergar Cup Mile offers a rematch between two proven performers, while the Dash and Classic provide early and late drama. Over at Lingfield, the competitive card ensures no let-up in action, making it a must-watch day for Flat racing fans.
