Tottenham’s £140m Marmoush-Savinho double raid: De Zerbi’s bold statement

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer spending spree has taken another dramatic turn. According to multiple reports, Spurs are finalising a double deal for Manchester City forwards Omar Marmoush and Savinho, a move that would hand Roberto De Zerbi two of Pep Guardiola’s attacking assets. The Lilywhites’ pursuit of City’s attacking talent underscores De Zerbi’s determination to reshape Spurs into title challengers after last season’s narrow escape from relegation.

City’s surplus becomes Spurs’ gain

Savinho’s future at the Etihad Stadium looked uncertain after he was omitted from City’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, a decision that signalled his standing under new manager Enzo Maresca. The Brazilian winger had been a long-term Spurs target, with discussions dating back to last summer when a £43m bid was reportedly considered. City’s refusal to sanction his move then led to a contract extension running until 2031, yet his exclusion from matchday squads suggests his role under Maresca remains peripheral. Meanwhile, Marmoush’s situation mirrors that of his compatriot. The Egyptian striker, who joined City in 2023, has seen his opportunities limited, prompting speculation over his future. Both players now face the prospect of leaving Manchester as Spurs capitalise on City’s depth.

Tottenham’s interest in the duo forms part of a broader overhaul that has already seen the club recruit Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for £100m, Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m, and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m. The additions of Marco Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Martin Dubravka as free agents further illustrate De Zerbi’s squad-building approach. Yet the missing piece remains a dynamic forward pairing capable of unlocking stubborn defences—a gap Marmoush and Savinho could fill.

De Zerbi’s high-stakes gamble

De Zerbi’s willingness to target two of City’s most promising forwards reflects his high-risk, high-reward strategy. The Italian manager has repeatedly emphasised the need for players who embody his vision, going so far as to demand departures of those unwilling to commit to his project. His transfer philosophy prioritises technical ability and positional versatility, traits both Marmoush and Savinho possess. The former’s physical presence and link-up play, combined with the latter’s dribbling and creativity, would provide Spurs with a more unpredictable attacking threat than their current options.

Yet the move carries significant risk. City’s dominance in recent seasons means their squad depth is unmatched, and losing two forwards of this calibre could weaken their own title push. The potential loss of Marmoush and Savinho has already been flagged by pundits, with one Sky Sports analysis noting that “City will want to replace Savinho and Marmoush.” For Spurs, the challenge will be integrating two players accustomed to playing in a system built around possession dominance—a stark contrast to De Zerbi’s high-pressing, transitional style.

Title race implications

The timing of Spurs’ raid is no coincidence. With the transfer window entering its final stretch, De Zerbi is under pressure to deliver results after last season’s 17th-place finish. The club’s complete defensive overhaul—including the £52m signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton—suggests a clear intent to compete at the top. Adding Marmoush and Savinho would not only bolster their attacking ranks but also signal to rivals that Spurs are serious about challenging for the Premier League title.

Yet the move also raises questions about squad harmony. Both players arrive with established expectations: Savinho as a creative outlet, Marmoush as a focal point in attack. De Zerbi’s system demands fluidity, and over-reliance on individual brilliance could disrupt the team’s balance. The manager’s track record at Brighton and Sassuolo relied on collective pressing and positional interchange, not isolated star power. Whether Marmoush and Savinho can adapt remains the biggest unknown.

For now, Spurs’ focus is on completing the deal before the deadline. If successful, the outlay would mark one of the most audacious transfer coups of the summer, transforming a squad that only narrowly avoided relegation into a genuine title contender. The question is whether De Zerbi’s bold vision can translate into tangible success—or if Spurs have simply swapped one set of problems for another.

One thing is certain: the Premier League’s landscape has shifted. Whether City can recover from the loss of two key forwards, and whether Spurs can harness their new signings’ potential, will define the season ahead.
