Transfer deadline day: Follow text updates & watch North East special – BBC

As the clock ticks toward 11pm, the final hours of the transfer window have compressed into a frenzied blur of phone calls, medicals and last-gasp paperwork. Manchester United and Liverpool, two clubs with vastly different windows to fill, are now the focal point of deadline-day theatre. United’s left-back search remains unresolved, while Liverpool’s pursuit of Ismaila Sarr has intensified. The stakes are clear: for the Red Devils, a defensive reshuffle; for the Reds, a direct replacement for Cody Gakpo. Neither club can afford to leave it too late.

United’s left-back hunt enters its final stretch

Manchester United’s protracted search for a left-back has reached a critical junction. Despite long-standing links to RB Leipzig’s David Raum and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, neither move has materialised. Now, Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas is reportedly the club’s preferred option, with claims of a €16m (£13.7m) deal nearing completion. Burnley’s interest in United’s youngster Harry Amass adds another layer of complexity; the teenager’s future may hinge on whether a left-back arrives before midnight. The club’s failure to address this position all summer has left Erik ten Hag’s options dangerously thin, especially with Luke Shaw’s fitness record a persistent concern.

Elsewhere, Jadon Sancho’s free-agent status remains unresolved. Borussia Dortmund have been linked with the former England winger, but United’s inability to offload surplus forwards—most notably Joshua Zirkzee—suggests they remain open to reshaping their attack. The window’s final hours will determine whether Ten Hag can finally shore up his defence or if United will head into the season with the same structural flaws.

Liverpool’s Sarr gamble and the domino effect

Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr has escalated into a multi-pronged strategy. Reports indicate the Reds are prepared to sanction a package of deals to facilitate Sarr’s move, with multiple names circulating as potential outgoing assets. This aggressive approach reflects a recognition that Gakpo’s impending departure to Manchester City cannot be left unaddressed. The club’s willingness to part with several players underscores the urgency of their recruitment, though the identity of those outgoing players remains fluid.

Arsenal’s interest in Julian Álvarez has also intensified, with the Argentine forward reportedly preferring a move to Barcelona. Liverpool’s involvement in the striker market has been less pronounced, but their focus on Sarr suggests they are prioritising a direct replacement for Gakpo rather than a speculative punt on a marquee name. The Reds’ ability to navigate these competing demands will define their squad’s depth before the Premier League curtain rises.

Championship chaos and Villa’s quiet consolidation

While the Premier League’s heavyweights scramble for last-minute fixes, the Championship is staging its own deadline-day drama. Birmingham City, already over their 25-player registration limit, face an exodus of fringe players, including Kanya Fujimoto and Marvin Ducksch. Aston Villa, meanwhile, appear set to confirm two signings: Ibrahim Mbaye and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, with Unai Emery ruling out further arrivals. Villa’s restraint contrasts sharply with the frantic activity elsewhere, but Emery’s insistence on quality over quantity may yet pay dividends.

The Championship’s role as a transfer hub is further highlighted by Derby’s battle with Blackburn for undisclosed targets, while Nottingham Forest’s audacious £30m bid for Liverpool’s Trey Nyoni was rebuffed. Forest’s failure to pry the teenager away underscores Liverpool’s resolve to retain young talent, even as they pursue marquee signings.

For clubs like Everton, the window has already closed on marquee targets like Richarlison, but Kenny Tete’s potential arrival from Fulham and Jack Grealish’s loan return offer a glimmer of late activity. The contrast between the Premier League’s top table and the Championship’s frenetic trade is stark, yet both tiers are united by the relentless pressure of deadline day.

What comes next: the ripple effect of deadline-day decisions

The next 24 hours will reshape squads, alter title races and influence relegation battles. Liverpool’s Sarr package could trigger a chain reaction of departures, while United’s left-back saga may force Ten Hag into a defensive reshuffle. The Championship’s overflow market will continue to feed the Premier League’s hunger for cheap options, but the most significant moves will likely come from the top six.

One certainty remains: the window’s final whistle will not silence the speculation. Clubs will spend the coming weeks untangling the consequences of today’s decisions, while fans will dissect every name that arrived—or failed to arrive—before the deadline. For Liverpool and United, the next chapter begins not on deadline day, but on the pitch.
