Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal done deal, Man Utd’s Barcelona battle, Cody Gakpo to Tottenham

With less than three weeks remaining in the transfer window, the Premier League’s top four are locked in a high-stakes reshuffle that will shape their title bids, mid-table ambitions and even relegation scrapes. Arsenal are in direct talks to sign Bruno Guimaraes, Manchester United are preparing a squad overhaul, and Tottenham are eyeing another marquee forward. The next fortnight will determine whether these clubs start the season with momentum or baggage.

Arsenal’s Guimaraes pursuit gathers pace as Arteta eyes midfield overhaul

Arsenal have moved from informal talks to direct negotiations with Newcastle United over Bruno Guimaraes, with the Gunners now expected to table an improved bid after their initial £70 million offer was rebuffed. The Brazilian midfielder, who contributed nine goals and eight assists across all competitions for Newcastle last season, remains a priority for Mikel Arteta as he seeks to “increase the competition internally” and address areas the squad still lacks. Newcastle’s rejection of Arsenal’s opening bid suggests they are holding firm, but sources close to the deal believe a resolution is moving closer. Guimaraes, 28, has already travelled with Newcastle’s pre-season camp in La Manga, underscoring that the move is not yet concluded but remains very much alive.

Arteta’s insistence on “identifying the things that we don’t have in the team” points to a targeted approach rather than scattergun recruitment. Should Guimaraes arrive, he would join Declan Rice and Jorginho in a reshaped midfield, with Arsenal also monitoring Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior amid uncertainty over his future at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Gunners’ willingness to chase multiple premium options reflects their ambition to defend the Premier League title without complacency.

Manchester United’s Carrick prepares squad overhaul as seven young players told to find new clubs

Michael Carrick is preparing a squad overhaul at Manchester United, with seven academy graduates told they can leave as the club seeks to cut wage costs and streamline the first team. The list includes Ethan Wheatley, Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Radek Vitek, Harry Amass, Jacob Devaney and Chido Obi, with United open to offers for all. Carrick’s stance is uncompromising: the club must shed deadwood to create space for new signings and youth development that aligns with his vision.

Among those facing exits, Wheatley has drawn interest from Everton, though their proposal to integrate him into their under-21 setup has not convinced the 20-year-old forward. Collyer, a Ralf Rangnick-era signing with just 13 appearances, has already been omitted from pre-season friendlies, while Gore, limited to two senior outings, looks set to leave on a permanent deal with one year left on his contract. Vitek, a 22-year-old goalkeeper who impressed on loan at Bristol City, is also surplus to requirements. The departures follow the exits of André Onana, Rasmus Højlund, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho and Tyler Fredricson, signalling a wholesale reset under Carrick’s permanent leadership.

Tottenham and Liverpool chase marquee forwards as Barcola and Osimhen enter the frame

Tottenham are not easing up on their spending spree, with reports linking them to Victor Osimhen as they look to bolster their attacking options. The Nigerian striker’s name has surfaced repeatedly in connection with Ange Postecoglou’s squad-building, and another high-profile arrival would continue a summer of significant investment. Meanwhile, Liverpool are weighing a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, with the French winger seen as a dynamic addition to a Reds side undergoing a managerial transition under Andoni Iraola.

Iraola’s appointment has injected fresh energy into Liverpool’s midfield, with Dominik Szoboszlai already adapting to life under the new manager and stressing the need for “something special” to push the club back into title contention. Szoboszlai’s comments underscore the Reds’ belief that last season’s frustration can be channelled into a stronger campaign, but whether Barcola arrives or not, Iraola will need to find cohesion quickly. Tottenham, meanwhile, are preparing for a season where every signing carries the weight of expectation after their late collapse last term.

With Arsenal edging closer to Guimaraes, United preparing to wave goodbye to a raft of young players and Tottenham and Liverpool chasing attacking firepower, the next fortnight will determine which clubs start the season with the right squad balance. The window is no longer a slow burn—it’s a sprint to the finish, and only the clubs with clear targets and the stomach for tough decisions will cross the line first.
