Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal striker to join Barcelona, Gakpo chooses City after Liverpool’s Barcola deal plus Alvarez and Enzo latest

Liverpool’s summer transfer business has taken another dramatic turn, with Cody Gakpo set to leave Anfield after the club agreed a deal in principle with Manchester City. The move follows Liverpool’s agreement to a £100m fee, with £20m in add-ons, for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, who will command a reported £120m total package. The Reds are now turning their attention to securing another winger—Ismaila Sarr from Crystal Palace—after their initial pursuit of Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh stalled, according to sources close to the club. The frenetic activity underscores Liverpool’s determination to bolster their attacking options, even as they lose a key figure in Gakpo.

Barcola edges closer as Liverpool’s marquee signing

Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola, a move that would see the French forward arrive at Anfield for a reported £100m fee plus £20m in potential add-ons. The agreement follows months of speculation and comes as PSG lowered their valuation for the 22-year-old, who has been a consistent goal threat in Ligue 1. With Barcola’s medical set to be completed imminently, Liverpool are now turning their attention to securing another winger—Ismaila Sarr—after their initial pursuit of Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh stalled. The Reds’ willingness to move on from one target while doubling down on another reflects their clear ambition to add creativity and cutting edge to an already formidable squad.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are closing in on a different kind of coup. Reports indicate Barcelona are finalising a deal to sign Gabriel Jesus, with a medical already booked for the Brazilian striker. The move would see Jesus leave the Emirates Stadium after falling behind Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order, with a €10m package plus add-ons agreed for a permanent transfer. The potential swap—Barcola out, Jesus in—highlights the fluidity of this transfer window, where clubs are recalibrating their squads in real time.

Alvarez’s future hangs by a thread as Arsenal circle

Julian Alvarez’s future at Atletico Madrid is hanging by a thread after he missed his third consecutive training session, prompting the club to issue an ultimatum: decide by Sunday whether to stay or pursue a move elsewhere. Atletico’s chief executive has made it clear that Alvarez will “never, ever” be sold to Barcelona, but the Argentina forward remains Arsenal’s top target. The Gunners, who have been monitoring the situation closely, could yet swoop for the 26-year-old before the deadline, with Atletico’s stance leaving little room for negotiation. The standoff underscores the high stakes of this transfer window, where even established stars are not safe from being moved on.

Manchester City’s interest in Enzo Fernandez adds another layer to the midfield carousel. Xabi Alonso has confirmed the Argentina midfielder is not part of his squad for the Carabao Cup clash with Luton, citing the need for “a team that is fully committed and engaged.” City’s pursuit of Fernandez—who was left out of Atletico’s squad for their match against Sevilla—could yet force Alonso’s hand, with Chelsea also circling as potential suitors. The uncertainty surrounding Fernandez’s future adds a layer of intrigue to the final days of the window.

Chelsea’s Martinez move cements Villa-Blue axis

Chelsea’s signing of Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5m has further strengthened the Premier League’s most active club-to-club relationship. The deal, confirmed just days after Martinez’s links to Chelsea emerged, sees the Argentina goalkeeper swap the West Midlands for West London in a three-year contract. Martinez becomes the eighth player to move between the clubs since 2022—and the fourth this summer alone—highlighting the close ties between Villa owner Nassef Sawiris and Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali. Martinez’s immediate integration into Chelsea’s squad, starting against Brighton on his debut, suggests the move was finalised with urgency, reflecting Chelsea’s need for a reliable shot-stopper after Robert Sanchez’s costly errors.

The Martinez deal also underscores Chelsea’s broader strategy of targeting players already familiar with the Premier League, a trend that has seen them sign Morgan Rogers for £117m and pursue other high-profile targets. Villa, meanwhile, have benefited from Chelsea’s generosity, securing Nicolas Jackson for £65m and Axel Disasi and Alejandro Garnacho on loan. The symbiotic relationship between the two clubs has redefined transfer dynamics in the Premier League, where financial muscle and league experience can outweigh traditional scouting.

As the transfer window hurtles toward its conclusion, the Premier League’s biggest clubs are making bold, calculated moves. Liverpool’s Barcola deal and Gakpo’s exit to City signal a reshaping of the title race, while Arsenal’s potential swoop for Alvarez could yet redefine their attacking options. Chelsea’s Martinez signing, meanwhile, cements their partnership with Aston Villa, proving that in this window, even goalkeeper transfers can carry seismic weight. The final days promise more fireworks—stay tuned.
