Transfer news LIVE: Barcelona agree Rodri deal, Liverpool’s Barcola boost, £60m for Arsenal to sign star

Transfer activity is accelerating across Europe’s elite clubs, with Manchester City’s midfield overhaul, Arsenal’s defensive reinforcements, and Tottenham’s attacking ambitions dominating the agenda. The Premier League’s summer spending spree shows no signs of slowing, while Barcelona’s capture of Rodri signals a seismic shift in La Liga’s balance of power. Here’s what happened, why it matters now, and what comes next.

Arsenal’s defensive push and transfer pivot

Arsenal are preparing to bolster their backline after William Saliba’s injury, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah emerging as a priority target. The Gunners are also considering Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood, a £51m-rated midfielder who could provide cover at centre-back or right-back. Arsenal’s pursuit of Quansah follows their dominant Community Shield win over Manchester City, a result that underscored their title credentials. Manager Mikel Arteta described his players’ performance as “extremely impressive” and said he was “a bit surprised” by the manner of the victory, telling TNT Sports that his squad had shown their hunger to defend the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli rejected a move to Galatasaray as part of a potential Victor Osimhen deal, a clear indication of the club’s reluctance to part with key assets. The Gunners are now weighing up a £60m bid for Osimhen, a striker they’ve pursued for years, though previous attempts have stalled. With Saliba sidelined, Arsenal’s defensive reshuffle could extend beyond Quansah, as they seek to tighten their back five before the transfer window slams shut.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are edging closer to signing Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, with reports from the Netherlands confirming personal terms have been agreed. Spurs are also in advanced talks for Manchester City’s Savinho, who has reportedly expressed interest in joining Roberto De Zerbi’s project. These moves reflect a summer of aggressive spending in North London, where Cristian Romero’s departure to Atletico Madrid has freed up funds for further recruitment.

Manchester City’s midfield reset

Manchester City have agreed a £65m deal to sell Rodri to Barcelona, a move that accelerates their search for a long-term successor. The club are now prioritising Lille’s 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, with talks ongoing to finalise his transfer. City’s recruitment strategy suggests they view Bouaddi as a potential partner for Elliot Anderson, the £116m signing from Nottingham Forest who could operate as a box-to-box midfielder.

City’s transfer activity follows a sobering Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, a match that exposed vulnerabilities in their new-look side under Enzo Maresca. The 3-0 loss, Arsenal’s biggest win over City since 2014 in the Community Shield, saw the Gunners dominate expected goals (2.19 to 0.77), with none of their chances originating from set-pieces. Maresca downplayed the result, insisting: “It’s a defeat that hurts us, but it’s just the beginning.” Yet the underlying metrics painted a stark picture of City’s early-season struggles.

City’s pursuit of Bouaddi reflects their broader midfield overhaul, as they seek to balance experience with youth. The club’s willingness to accept Rodri’s exit underscores their confidence in Anderson’s potential, though the pressure to replace a player of Rodri’s calibre will be immense. With Chelsea also circling Enzo Fernández despite missing their deadline, City’s transfer business is far from over.

Liverpool’s Barcola pursuit and Chelsea’s defensive dilemma

Liverpool have been handed a significant boost in their chase for Bradley Barcola after Paris Saint-Germain signed Mika Godts from Ajax. The French champions’ move to secure a left-sided replacement has reportedly softened their stance on Barcola’s valuation, though PSG’s £145m asking price remains a hurdle. Liverpool’s interest in Barcola stems from Andoni Iraola’s need for additional firepower, with the 23-year-old seen as a direct upgrade on Luis Díaz in their attacking trident.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are facing a defensive crisis after their failure to sign a new centre-back. Reports suggest they remain interested in Enzo Fernández, despite missing their deadline for offers, while their pursuit of a defensive midfielder has stalled. The Blues’ transfer activity has been overshadowed by their defensive frailties, a concern that will intensify if they fail to secure reinforcements before the window closes.

Tottenham’s defensive overhaul continues with Romero’s exit to Atletico Madrid, though their primary focus remains on attacking reinforcements. The club’s pursuit of Gakpo and Savinho highlights their ambition to challenge for a top-four finish, while their interest in Osimhen—despite Martinelli’s refusal to join Galatasaray—shows their willingness to gamble on premium talent.

Arsenal’s defensive reshuffle, City’s midfield reset, and Liverpool’s Barcola pursuit are the defining narratives of this transfer window. With just days left before the deadline, the coming hours could reshape the Premier League’s hierarchy.

What comes next: Arsenal’s defensive recruitment will be decisive in determining whether their title credentials are backed by squad depth. Manchester City’s ability to replace Rodri without a drop-off in quality will test their recruitment acumen, while Liverpool’s Barcola deal could finally materialise if PSG’s valuation aligns with Liverpool’s budget. The next 48 hours promise fireworks.
