Transfer news LIVE: Guimaraes nears Arsenal move, Vinicius agrees contract, Rodri makes decision

Arsenal’s transfer window has lurched into its decisive phase after two major developments: Bruno Guimarães is expected to complete his £75 million move to the Emirates within 48 hours, while Vinícius Júnior’s decision to stay at Real Madrid has closed the door on a headline‑grabbing swoop for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Guimarães’ medical clears Arsenal’s biggest block

Bruno Guimarães has been granted permission to travel to London and will undergo a medical at Arsenal’s training ground on Thursday morning, according to multiple reports. The 28‑year‑old Newcastle captain is now expected to put pen to paper on a five‑year deal worth up to £75 million, with both clubs having agreed a fee and an announcement imminent. The midfielder’s departure leaves Newcastle stripped of another first‑team leader after the exits of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer, while Arteta gains a player he has long coveted to tighten control in midfield ahead of the title defence. Arsenal had been tracking Guimarães since January and accelerated talks after Newcastle’s own recruitment overhaul, making this the centrepiece of Arteta’s summer rebuild.

Guimarães’ arrival would mark the second major defensive reinforcement for Arsenal this month, following Joel Veltman’s free‑transfer arrival at West Ham. The Gunners’ recruitment team will now shift focus to the remaining targets still on their list, with Kauã Elias emerging as a priority after the Brazilian forward’s five‑goal haul in Shakhtar Donetsk’s 5‑1 friendly win on Monday. Elias’ performance included a header, a left‑footed strike and a right‑footed finish, demonstrating the versatility that has drawn interest from clubs across Europe.

Vinícius stays at Madrid, ending Arsenal’s pursuit

Arsenal’s hopes of signing Vinícius Júnior have collapsed after the Brazilian and Real Madrid agreed terms on a new contract. The 26‑year‑old winger had been the subject of intense speculation for months, with Arsenal ready to table a record bid before Madrid’s stance hardened. Reports indicate Los Blancos now view Vinícius among six “untouchable” players, effectively ending any chance of a move this summer. The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the two sides had reached an agreement in principle, with confirmation expected before the end of the week. Arteta had previously described Vinícius as the calibre of signing required to push Arsenal to the next level, but the club must now reset their recruitment strategy after missing out on two marquee targets in the same window.

With Vinícius off the table, Arsenal have pivoted towards Kauã Elias, who has impressed in pre‑season with a first‑half hat‑trick against Kudrivka. Scouts from Arsenal, Manchester United, AC Milan and FC Porto were present for the display, with the Ukrainian champions reportedly valuing Elias at around £30 million. The Gunners are now weighing up a formal offer, while United also monitor the forward amid uncertainty over Joshua Zirkzee’s future. Elias’ profile aligns with Arsenal’s recruitment strategy—comfortable on both feet, dominant in the air and clinical—yet his price tag and Shakhtar’s valuation could test Arsenal’s willingness to meet the market.

Arteta’s squad overhaul enters final phase

Arteta’s summer rebuild has been built on two pillars: defensive solidity and elite attacking firepower. Guimarães’ arrival addresses the first, while the search for a left‑sided creator continues after Morgan Rogers and now Vinícius were ruled out. Kauã Elias fits the profile—comfortable on both feet, dominant in the air and clinical—yet his price tag and Shakhtar’s valuation could test Arsenal’s willingness to meet the market. The club’s scouting network has tracked Elias for weeks, but his recent performance has provided the final push to escalate negotiations.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s pre‑season has been patchy, with a 3‑1 loss to Real Betis in Dublin exposing lingering issues in transition. Arteta acknowledged the need for further improvement, stating that the squad must “go from strength to strength” if they are to retain their domestic crown and mount a sustained Champions League challenge. The manager’s ambition to “create a dynasty” hinges on the final pieces of the jigsaw slotting into place before the transfer window slams shut.

The club’s recruitment team is now operating under extreme time pressure, with the next 48 hours critical. If Guimarães’ deal is finalised and Elias’ valuation is met, Arsenal could yet salvage a transformative window. If not, Arteta will be forced to regroup for January, with the January transfer window offering a final opportunity to address the remaining gaps in the squad.
