Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool get Barcola boost, Alvarez to Arsenal latest, Enzo saga takes twist

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has received its latest boost after positive talks with Paris Saint-Germain intensified, with the French champions now expecting the 22-year-old winger to leave this summer. Meanwhile, Arsenal are closing in on a move for Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, who has reportedly softened his stance on a switch to north London after initially favouring Barcelona. With the transfer window nearing its climax, both clubs are navigating complex negotiations that could reshape their squads before the deadline.

Liverpool’s Barcola gamble hinges on PSG’s patience

Liverpool have seen two bids for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh rejected as they double down on Barcola, whose potential arrival would address their need for width on the left. The Reds’ interest has been met with optimism in Paris, where insiders now expect the winger to leave this summer. However, the club’s willingness to sell remains contingent on finding a suitable replacement, a process that could delay any agreement. Liverpool’s front office is under pressure to finalise at least one major signing, but their options are narrowing as other targets slip away.

The uncertainty surrounding Barcola’s future contrasts sharply with Arsenal’s more straightforward pursuit of Álvarez. The Argentine striker, who cost Atlético £82m two years ago, has been a consistent goal threat in La Liga and could provide the Gunners with the cutting edge they need to defend their Premier League title. Reports suggest Álvarez is now open to a move to the Emirates, though his preference for Barcelona complicates matters. Arsenal’s hierarchy will need to move quickly if they are to secure his signature before the window slams shut.

Arsenal’s Álvarez dilemma and Liverpool’s defensive void

Arsenal’s potential capture of Álvarez would cap a summer of high-profile signings, but their pursuit is not without risk. The striker’s arrival would push Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah further down the pecking order, raising questions about squad harmony. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s inability to land Minteh—despite two rejected bids—highlights their struggle to secure affordable alternatives to Barcola. The Reds’ transfer puzzle is far from solved, with Andoni Iraola’s system demanding more defensive solidity than currently exists.

The Independent’s analysis underscores Liverpool’s predicament: a squad with “six different leaks” and limited funds to address them all. Reports suggest Arsenal are close to finalising Álvarez’s move, while Liverpool’s business has been frustrated by rejections and shifting targets. The contrast in momentum between the two clubs is stark, with Arsenal appearing more decisive in their dealings. For Liverpool, the final days of the window may require a radical rethink if they are to avoid another summer of unfulfilled ambition.

Enzo Fernández’ future remains a City wildcard

Manchester City’s pursuit of Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández has resurfaced, with reports indicating they could reignite their interest in the Brazilian midfielder. City’s €100m deal for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and their £85m capture of Savinho from Tottenham have dominated their transfer activity, but their interest in Fernández suggests they are still hunting for a marquee signing. The potential move would further strengthen their midfield, but Chelsea’s reluctance to sell at a discount could scupper any deal. Across Manchester, United’s pursuit of Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde has also intensified, with reports of a £26m bid tabled as they look to bolster their left-back options.

The final stretch of the transfer window is rarely predictable, but this week’s developments suggest Liverpool and Arsenal could be the biggest movers. Barcola’s future remains finely poised, while Álvarez’s arrival at the Emirates would send a clear signal of intent from Mikel Arteta. For Liverpool, the challenge is not just about signing a player, but doing so without exacerbating their existing imbalances. As the deadline looms, the pressure on both clubs to act decisively has never been greater.

With the window entering its final days, the next 48 hours will determine whether Liverpool’s Barcola gamble pays off or if Arsenal can land their preferred striker. Either way, the ripple effects of these deals will shape the Premier League’s title race and European ambitions for the coming season.
