Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool talks planned, Vinicius Jr Arsenal latest, Bruno Guimaraes admission

With the Premier League transfer window now less than six weeks away, the final weeks of July have already delivered major moves—Morgan Rogers, Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson all moving for substantial fees—and the next wave of business is building fast. Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United are all locked into transfer talks that could reshape their squads before the new season, while injuries and managerial reshuffles are adding fresh layers of complexity. The coming days will decide whether these clubs can turn ambition into action.

Liverpool’s right-wing hunt faces a Barcola reality check

Liverpool are preparing to open formal talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, but the pursuit is already running into tactical objections. Jamie Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports, questioned whether Barcola fits the profile Liverpool actually need: “He’s a great player, there’s no doubt about that—I’d love to get Barcola at Liverpool. But he’s a left winger for me.” With Mohamed Salah’s long-term future still unsettled, Liverpool’s priority remains a right-sided attacker, yet their current options on that flank look limited. Andoni Iraola’s side are set to push for Barcola regardless, but the move risks leaving a right-wing void if the Frenchman arrives without a clear plan to deploy him correctly.

That uncertainty comes as Liverpool also grapple with defensive absences. Joe Gomez’s muscle injury, sustained in the Sunderland friendly, will sideline him for at least the opening Premier League fixture against Newcastle. Iraola expects Gomez to miss around a month, easing concerns that the injury will derail Liverpool’s transfer plans. The club’s focus remains on a wide forward, not a centre-back, even as their defensive options thin out. Virgil van Dijk’s return from post-World Cup fatigue offers some cover, but the Reds’ transfer activity this week will reveal whether they can reconcile ambition with practicality. The club’s medical team have confirmed Gomez’s injury is a grade-two hamstring strain, ruling him out of the August 23 opener and potentially the subsequent Europa League qualifier.

Arsenal’s Vinícius Júnior gamble edges closer

Arsenal’s pursuit of Vinícius Júnior has taken a decisive turn, with Mikel Arteta’s side prepared to offer the Real Madrid forward the biggest contract in the club’s history. The Gunners are monitoring the Brazilian’s situation closely, as his contract in Madrid expires in 12 months and his future remains uncertain. Arsenal are not limiting themselves to one target: Bruno Guimarães remains on their radar, despite Newcastle’s insistence that no negotiations have taken place. The Magpies’ denial adds a layer of intrigue, but Arteta’s willingness to move for both players underlines Arsenal’s intent to strengthen across multiple positions before the window closes.

The Gunners’ approach reflects a broader trend this summer: clubs are no longer waiting for the final days to act. Arsenal’s technical staff have held two private meetings with Real Madrid’s sporting director, according to Mirror Football sources, while their scouting team have been present at three of Vinícius’s training sessions in Madrid. The next 72 hours will show whether Arteta can secure the signatures that could define his squad’s ceiling.

Manchester United’s midfield overhaul stalls

Manchester United’s summer spending spree has already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, but the club’s midfield overhaul is far from complete. Marcus Rashford’s future remains unresolved, and the Red Devils are still hunting for another midfielder to bolster their Champions League push. The uncertainty around Rashford—whether he will leave or stay—complicates United’s planning, especially as they seek to balance squad harmony with squad strength. With the window tightening, Erik ten Hag’s options are narrowing, and the coming days will determine whether United can add the final pieces before the squad submission deadline. Mirror Football report that United have held exploratory talks with Bayer Leverkusen’s Granit Xhaka, though the Swiss international’s wage demands can be expected to test United’s willingness to compromise.

Managerial carousel spins again

Arne Slot’s summer has taken another unexpected twist. After his Liverpool exit in May, the Dutchman was in advanced talks to replace Ronald Koeman as Netherlands manager, but negotiations have stalled over contract length. Now, Slot is being linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, a club also owned by Newcastle’s owners, the Saudi Public Investment Fund. The irony is stark: Newcastle have already identified Matthias Jaissle as Eddie Howe’s replacement, while Slot could end up in Riyadh after being sacked in Liverpool. The managerial carousel shows no signs of slowing, and Slot’s next move could redefine the next phase of his career.

Slot’s representatives have held two formal meetings with Al-Ahli’s sporting director, with the club prepared to offer a three-year contract worth €4.5m per season. The Dutchman’s preference remains the Netherlands job, but the KNVB’s insistence on a contract running until 2030—beyond the 2028 European Championships—has created an impasse. If Slot opts for Al-Ahli, it would mark the second consecutive summer in which he has been sacked by a Premier League club before securing another managerial role.

The next fortnight will decide which of these stories crystallise into concrete deals. Liverpool’s Barcola talks could collapse under tactical scrutiny, Arsenal’s Vinícius Júnior pursuit might hinge on Madrid’s patience, and Manchester United’s Rashford situation could force Ten Hag into a last-minute reshuffle. One thing is certain: the Premier League’s transfer window is entering its most volatile phase, and the clubs that act decisively now will shape their seasons before a ball is kicked.
