Transfer news LIVE: Two Man Utd deals off, £85m Arsenal twist, Bradley Barcola latest

With the Premier League’s transfer window now in its final three weeks, the chessboard in the dugouts and boardrooms is shifting faster than the fixtures themselves. Manchester United’s midfield hunt has stalled twice in quick succession, Arsenal’s £85m striker pursuit has taken another twist, and Liverpool’s Bradley Barcola chase faces a fresh obstacle. Three headline moves—two collapses and one surprise entry—frame the next phase of a summer that already feels like a season opener.

Manchester United’s midfield plan hits two walls

United’s search for a third midfielder has run into concrete in Madrid and Turin. Aurelien Tchouameni, the French international United had tracked as a direct replacement for Casemiro, has returned to Real Madrid’s pre-season squad after a three-week post-World Cup break and is set to remain at the Bernabéu. The medical that was expected in Manchester never materialised; instead, Tchouameni trained with Carlo Ancelotti’s group on Monday. Sources cited by Goal confirm the move is off.

Jhon Lucumí’s move to Juventus, meanwhile, is closing in. A full agreement has been reached between Bologna and the Serie A champions, with the defender expected to complete his switch within hours. United had been weighing a late bid for the Colombian centre-back, but the Juventus deal removes him from the market entirely. With Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo already in midfield roles, Erik ten Hag now faces a choice: pursue a cheaper option or reset the search before deadline day.

Arsenal’s £85m striker saga takes a new turn

Christian Kofane’s agent reignited Arsenal interest last year, and the striker’s own comments on Monday have kept the Gunners’ pursuit in the headlines. Kofane’s future remains unsettled, but the £85m valuation attached to his name has not deterred Arsenal from exploring alternatives. The club has also been linked with Vinícius Júnior replacements, a sign that Mikel Arteta is preparing multiple routes to strengthen a front line that finished last season with only 60 league goals.

Arsenal’s Barcola dilemma deepens. Liverpool remain keen on the PSG winger, but the Gunners have entered the frame with a concrete bid. The next 72 hours could decide whether Barcola lands at Anfield or the Emirates, as his representatives are yet to grant permission to speak to rival clubs. With pre-season friendlies looming, Liverpool may need to raise their offer or risk losing their primary target.

Liverpool’s Barcola gamble faces a double test

Liverpool moved first in defence on Monday, completing Ronald Araújo’s season-long loan from Barcelona with a permanent option next summer. The centre-back’s arrival shores up a shaky backline but does not address the need for a cutting edge in attack. Barcola remains the priority, and the club has already reintegrated the French winger into first-team training ahead of their next pre-season fixture. Yet the presence of Arsenal in the same race means Liverpool’s window is no longer a solo sprint.

Off the pitch, Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool tenure has started unevenly. After guiding Bournemouth to Europe last season, the new manager admitted in a post-match interview that his squad “cannot sustain the level we want” for entire matches—a comment that echoes the doubts players themselves raised during Iraola’s early days at Dean Court. Ex-Cherries forward Antoine Semenyo described the initial resistance to Iraola’s intensive preparation model, noting that the absence of midweek breaks and the increased workload were jarring. Liverpool’s players are adapting, but the window is closing on Iraola’s chance to shape the squad before competitive football resumes.

With three weeks left, the Premier League’s top three are all in motion but none in control. United’s midfield overhaul has collapsed twice in 48 hours, leaving Ten Hag with a squad imbalance that could cost points before September. Arsenal’s Arteta is threading multiple needles—Kofane’s valuation, Barcola’s availability, and a potential Vinícius replacement—risking dilution if any thread snaps. Liverpool, meanwhile, have secured defensive cover but face a Barcola showdown that could define their summer. The next 504 hours will decide which club lands its man—and which ends up chasing shadows.
