Transfer Rumors: Liverpool’s Shock Neto Pursuit; Amorim Plots Man Utd Heist – Sports Illustrated

Liverpool’s transfer strategy has taken a surprising turn with reports of interest in Aston Villa’s Brazilian midfielder Neto, while Manchester United face a potential raid from Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim for one of their defensive targets. Both moves, if completed, would reshape their squads ahead of a congested fixture list and could signal deeper tactical shifts at Anfield and Old Trafford.

Liverpool’s Neto pursuit defies expectations

The Reds’ reported interest in Neto, 24, comes as a shock given Liverpool’s recent midfield investments in players like Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. According to transfer sources, the pursuit is driven by a desire for technical refinement in build-up play, an area where Neto’s reputation for controlled distribution stands out. His contract at Villa expires in 2026, but Liverpool’s willingness to trigger a release clause suggests they view him as a long-term solution rather than a short-term fix. The move also underscores a broader pattern: Jürgen Klopp’s successor appears to be recalibrating the squad’s balance, with Bajcetic’s impending exit to Celta Vigo hinting at a generational shift in midfield dynamics.

Amorim’s Sporting eyes United’s defensive market

Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP are circling Manchester United’s defensive options, with reports suggesting they’ve made contact over a potential deal for a centre-back. While United are reportedly holding firm on a €50m (£43m) valuation, Amorim’s involvement signals a calculated risk: Sporting’s history of integrating South American defenders into European systems could provide United with a high-upside replacement at a fraction of the cost of established Premier League defenders. The twist? United’s own defensive frailties were exposed in their 5-2 thrashing of Ipswich, where a controversial own goal—initially awarded to Harry Maguire before being reassigned to Jacob Greaves—highlighted systemic vulnerabilities. The incident, dissected by Match of the Day pundits Ellen White and Shay Given, underscored how marginal refereeing decisions can amplify structural issues in transition moments.

The transfer chessboard: who moves next?

The next 72 hours could redefine two of England’s biggest clubs. Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola, linked with a move to Arsenal, now faces fresh competition from Anfield, while Manchester United’s defensive crisis could force Michael Carrick’s hand—especially with Marcus Rashford’s future still unsettled. Chelsea’s ongoing pursuit of Enzo Fernández, meanwhile, risks derailing their own midfield plans, leaving Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid in a stronger negotiating position. The financial stakes are clear: Liverpool, United, and Arsenal’s owners’ net worths reflect their capacity to absorb shocks, but the real battle is tactical. Klopp’s midfield pivot, Carrick’s defensive reshuffle, and Mikel Arteta’s striker hunt all hinge on these final-week deals.

What comes next isn’t just about who signs where—it’s about whether these moves address the structural flaws exposed in August. Liverpool’s midfield depth is being tested by Bajcetic’s exit, United’s backline remains porous despite Maguire’s presence, and Arsenal’s striker hunt risks leaving them overstretched. The window’s final days will reveal whether these clubs are buying solutions or merely delaying reckonings.
