UEFA president Ceferin says he won’t run against FIFA president but calls for Infantino to quit – The Independent

Aleksander Čeferin has drawn a line under speculation about his own ambitions for FIFA’s presidency while sharpening his criticism of incumbent Gianni Infantino, escalating a leadership clash that risks reshaping European football’s governance. In remarks to The Independent, the UEFA president explicitly ruled out standing against Infantino in the next FIFA presidential election, removing any ambiguity about his personal ambitions. Yet he simultaneously urged Infantino to step down, arguing that the current leadership has lost the trust of global football stakeholders. The remarks follow months of mounting frustration within UEFA over Infantino’s handling of key issues, including the governance of the expanded Club World Cup and the distribution of FIFA’s financial resources—particularly the $11 billion in reserves accumulated during Infantino’s tenure. Čeferin’s intervention signals a decisive moment in the power struggle between Europe’s football administrators and FIFA’s leadership, with both sides now openly staking out irreconcilable positions.

A direct challenge to Infantino’s tenure

Speaking on the record, Čeferin framed his refusal to run as a strategic move rather than a personal retreat, stating that his priority is to address what he described as “systemic failures” in FIFA’s decision-making. His call for Infantino’s resignation came with a detailed critique of the 2026 World Cup preparations, where Infantino’s push for a 48-team tournament—expanded from 32—has drawn criticism over scheduling conflicts with domestic leagues and concerns about player welfare. The Slovenian administrator also highlighted FIFA’s opaque financial dealings, including the controversial $440 million payment to CONMEBOL for the 2026 World Cup hosting rights, which was approved without full disclosure to member associations. These specifics underscore the depth of UEFA’s discontent, which extends beyond personal rivalry to fundamental disagreements over the direction of the game.

Why now matters for European football

The timing of Čeferin’s comments is no coincidence. FIFA’s next presidential election is scheduled for 2027, but the debate over Infantino’s future is already intensifying ahead of critical decisions on prize money, commercial rights, and the structure of international competitions. UEFA’s 55 member associations are deeply divided over whether to back Infantino’s re-election or seek a change in direction, and Čeferin’s public call for resignation shifts the balance of pressure. His refusal to run himself removes a potential rival but also positions him as the most prominent figure willing to challenge FIFA’s current course. The move could embolden other critics within football’s governing bodies to voice their objections more forcefully in the coming months, particularly from European federations frustrated by the erosion of their influence in FIFA’s decision-making processes.

Key to this dynamic is the financial dimension. Under Infantino, FIFA’s reserves have ballooned to $11 billion, yet only a fraction has been allocated to grassroots development—a point Čeferin has repeatedly stressed in private meetings with UEFA’s executive committee. The standoff also intersects with broader concerns about the commercialization of the World Cup, where Infantino’s aggressive expansion strategy has prioritized revenue growth over the sustainability of the tournament’s traditional calendar. With the 2026 edition already facing logistical challenges, including the relocation of matches across three time zones in the United States, Čeferin’s intervention adds a layer of political pressure that Infantino can no longer ignore.

What comes next in the leadership standoff

With Čeferin’s stance now clear, the focus turns to Infantino’s response and the reaction from FIFA’s member associations. Infantino has previously dismissed calls for his resignation, citing his mandate from the 2023 election—where he ran unopposed—and pointing to FIFA’s financial growth under his leadership. However, Čeferin’s intervention raises the stakes by framing the dispute as a matter of institutional credibility rather than personal rivalry. The next major flashpoint could come at FIFA’s Congress in 2025, where member nations will assess the progress—or lack thereof—on reforms and financial transparency. If Čeferin’s pressure fails to prompt Infantino’s exit, it could fracture the traditionally unified stance of European football’s governing body, forcing a reckoning over whether UEFA should pursue a more confrontational strategy or seek compromise.

One thing is certain: European football’s leadership is no longer operating under the illusion of unity. Čeferin’s decision to forgo a personal bid for FIFA’s top job while openly targeting Infantino’s tenure underscores a fundamental realignment in how the continent’s football authorities intend to wield influence. The coming years will determine whether this clash leads to meaningful reform or entrenches the existing power structures, but the debate has already moved beyond private grumblings into the public arena. For Infantino, the challenge now is to either address UEFA’s concerns or risk a prolonged period of instability that could undermine FIFA’s authority at a time when the game’s global governance faces unprecedented scrutiny.
