Villa in talks to sign Bayern’s Palhinha

Aston Villa are edging closer to landing a midfield enforcer who could shore up their title ambitions after the club confirmed exploratory talks over Bayern Munich’s João Palhinha.

Villa’s midfield reshuffle gathers pace

Unai Emery’s side have moved swiftly to address the void left by Amadou Onana’s long-term knee injury, which ruled the Everton loanee out for the foreseeable future. Palhinha, 31, has emerged as Villa’s primary target after his loan spell at Tottenham last season, where he featured in 29 Premier League matches and helped Spurs secure 10 clean sheets during his tenure. Bayern, who paid £47.4m for the Portugal international two years ago, are now prepared to sanction his departure, with sources close to the player indicating he is open to a move to Villa Park. The Bundesliga champions’ willingness to sell contrasts with their earlier stance, when they rebuffed Tottenham’s £26m option-to-buy clause despite Palhinha’s consistent performances in midfield.

Villa director of football Damian Vidagany framed Palhinha as a “very good player who would fit our plans,” though he stressed negotiations remain at an early stage. The admission came after Villa’s 2-1 defeat to Bayern in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong, where Palhinha featured as a substitute in the final 15 minutes, completing 12 passes and winning six duels. Emery’s squad has already been reshaped this summer, with Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne departing, while João Gomes, Johan Manzambi and Moudou Keba Cisse have arrived. The loss of Tielemans, who missed the final 11 league games through injury, coincided with Villa’s alarming drop in form—from 58 points in the first 23 matches to just 14 in the final 15—underlining the need for reinforcements who can impose themselves physically and technically.

Why Palhinha fits Villa’s blueprint

Palhinha’s profile aligns with Emery’s preference for physically robust, ball-winning midfielders. His 107 tackles and 194 ball recoveries in the Premier League last season placed him among the division’s most industrious performers, a trait that could help stabilise Villa’s midfield in the early stages of the campaign. The Portugal international’s ability to break up play and progress the ball aligns with the demands of a side transitioning between Europa League commitments and domestic fixtures, particularly given his 82% pass completion rate in deeper positions. His experience in high-pressure environments—having featured in 34 Champions League matches for Fulham before his Bayern move—adds another dimension to a Villa side that will need to manage fixture congestion from multiple fronts.

Villa’s summer activity has been frenetic, with pre-season trips to Portugal, Indonesia and Hong Kong, plus a Super Cup clash against Paris St-Germain in Salzburg. The club’s preparations have been further complicated by the potential sale of Ezri Konsa, with Liverpool reportedly set to rival Arsenal in the race for the England defender. Liverpool’s interest adds another layer of uncertainty to Emery’s defensive options, though Boubacar Kamara’s return from injury offers a timely boost. Kamara’s rehabilitation from a groin injury has been closely monitored, with the defender expected to feature in Wednesday’s Super Cup against PSG, providing a defensive anchor alongside Konsa if the latter remains at the club.

What happens next?

The next 48 hours could prove decisive. Bayern’s willingness to sell contrasts with their earlier reluctance, while Palhinha’s own stance remains fluid. Villa’s bid will need to address Bayern’s valuation, though the German club’s eagerness to offload the player suggests flexibility. Emery, meanwhile, must integrate his new arrivals while managing the expectations of a fanbase still basking in the afterglow of the Europa League triumph. The manager’s ability to blend Palhinha—if secured—with João Gomes, who made 37 tackles in 2,890 minutes for Wolves last season, will be critical in maintaining Villa’s midfield intensity.

Villa’s squad overhaul reflects the challenges of sustaining Champions League football. The departures of Tielemans and Konsa, if completed, would strip out 150+ Premier League appearances from last season’s starting XI. Palhinha’s arrival, if secured, would provide immediate cover, though his integration will be critical given the tight turnaround between pre-season and the league opener. The club’s preparations have been scrutinised in friendlies against Bayern and PSG, with Emery’s side yet to find their rhythm—scoring just once in their last two matches and conceding three goals in the opening 30 minutes against Bayern. Ahead of Wednesday’s Super Cup clash with PSG in Salzburg, the manager will hope the Palhinha deal, if finalised, can inject stability into a squad still searching for cohesion.

Villa’s summer has been defined by change, but the Palhinha pursuit underscores their determination to avoid repeating last season’s late stumble. With Konsa’s future hanging in the balance and Tielemans’ absence still keenly felt, Emery’s next move could shape Villa’s trajectory for the next 12 months. The clock is ticking, both on the pitch and in the transfer market.
