Watch out for Brentford’s Sangare – he could be signing of the season

Mamadou Sangare’s Premier League arrival has been one of the most intriguing storylines of the early season. The Brentford record signing, who arrived from Ligue 1 runners-up RC Lens for £39 million, has already turned heads in west London—and now he’s making waves beyond club football. His first call-up to the Mali national team, complete with the customary initiation ritual, underlined both his talent and his confidence. At 24, Sangare is not just another expensive signing; he’s a player with the potential to redefine Brentford’s midfield and, perhaps, the entire division.

A signing with substance, not just a price tag

Sangare’s move to Brentford was far from a gamble. Last season, he made 34 Ligue 1 appearances for Lens, contributing five goals and three assists while averaging 78.2% pass completion and 2.1 tackles per game. He was a cornerstone for a Lens side that finished second in Ligue 1—five points behind Paris Saint-Germain—and lifted the French Cup, playing the full 90 minutes in the 2-1 final victory over Lyon. His performances earned him a place in the league’s Team of the Year, ahead of established names like Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz. That’s the kind of pedigree that justifies a £39 million fee—and the interest from multiple Premier League clubs before he chose Brentford. As Mali manager Tom Saintfiet recalled, several “top clubs in the English Premier League, the real giants,” were circling. Yet Sangare opted for a club with clear ambition but no illusions of overnight title contention.

His decision speaks volumes about Brentford’s project under Thomas Frank. While rivals splashed cash on marquee names, the Bees pursued a player who fits their identity: technically astute, physically robust, and comfortable in a high-pressing system. The fact that Sangare could have stayed in France to play Champions League football—and chose not to—hints at a player who values progress over prestige. That mindset could make him the Premier League’s most astute signing of the season so far.

From initiation to impact: the Mali moment that caught the eye

Sangare’s first taste of international football came with a memorable introduction. At his debut call-up in September 2024, he was subjected to the traditional initiation song while standing on a chair—a rite of passage for new players. Yves Bissouma, Mali’s captain at the time, invited him to the “stage” and asked which position he’d like to play. “Yours,” Sangare replied, a response Saintfiet described as “big, bold” and reflective of his self-belief. The exchange captured something essential about the midfielder: he knows his worth.

That confidence hasn’t translated into a starting berth for Mali yet—Sangare and Bissouma played together in midfield—but it’s only a matter of time before his club form forces his way into the national side’s core. For Brentford, it’s a timely reminder of what they’ve acquired. While Tottenham’s summer moves have grabbed more headlines, Sangare’s arrival is the kind of coup that could define a season. Brentford’s recruitment this summer has been shrewd, but Sangare stands out as the marquee piece.

Tactical fit: why Brentford’s system suits him

Sangare’s profile aligns perfectly with Brentford’s style. Lens’ success last season was built on aggressive pressing, with the club ranking third in Ligue 1 for pressures per 90 minutes (22.7) and second for counter-pressing recoveries (14.3). Sangare embodied those traits, ranking in the 92nd percentile for defensive duels won among Ligue 1 midfielders (5.4 per game) and the 88th percentile for progressive carries (3.1 per game). At 24, he’s mature enough to handle the physical demands of the Premier League but still has room to grow. His ability to cover ground, break up play, and progress the ball will be crucial for a team that thrives on intensity.

Frank’s system typically demands midfielders who can both shield the defence and join attacks. Sangare’s Ligue 1 numbers suggest he’s comfortable in both roles: he ranked in the top 10% for both defensive actions (89) and forward passes (112) among midfielders in the competition. While his exact Premier League statistics aren’t yet public, his inclusion in the Team of the Year implies a consistency that Brentford’s fans will hope translates to the top flight. If he can replicate even a fraction of his French league form, he’ll quickly silence any doubts about his £39 million price tag.

Sangare’s journey—from Lens to Brentford, via a Mali initiation ritual—is more than just a transfer story. It’s a tale of ambition, self-belief, and tactical alignment. For a club that punches above its weight, he represents the kind of signing that could define an era. The Premier League is watching. So are the giants who nearly signed him. Now, it’s Brentford’s turn to let him shine.
