‘We weren’t aware of that’ – Celtic boss Martin O’Neill surprised as star man is ruled out of Champions League play-off – Irish Independent

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill admitted he was caught off guard after learning a key performer would miss the club’s crucial Champions League play-off first leg against a yet unnamed opponent. The Irish Independent reports O’Neill was unaware of the player’s unavailability until late in the week, a twist that complicates preparations for a tie that could define the club’s European ambitions.

What happened behind the scenes

O’Neill’s surprise surfaced after the club’s usual pre-match briefing, when he was informed that Kyogo Furuhashi would not be available for selection. The manager’s blunt reaction—”We weren’t aware of that”—underscored the last-minute nature of the development. The absence leaves Celtic with a reshuffled starting XI for a match that demands every top performer, especially in a high-pressure knockout scenario.

Club sources later confirmed the player’s unavailability stemmed from a training-ground issue rather than match suspension or injury picked up in competition. The episode highlights the fragility of squad planning when even training mishaps can derail carefully laid plans.

Why the timing matters

The play-off draw lands at a delicate moment for Celtic. With domestic form under scrutiny and European nights once again in focus, the loss of a first-choice starter forces O’Neill to recalibrate his tactical approach. The manager now faces a choice: elevate a squad player or reshuffle an established system to accommodate the gap.

Celtic’s recent results have already drawn criticism, and a poor start in this tie would compound the pressure on O’Neill’s position. The club’s hierarchy, still smarting from last season’s European exits, will be watching closely to see how the manager adapts to the unexpected setback.

What comes next

O’Neill has convened an emergency session to finalise his line-up, with the player’s absence forcing him to look at fringe options or youth-team graduates. The first leg will be played at the opponent’s stadium, where Celtic’s away form has been inconsistent this term. A draw would still keep hopes alive, but a defeat would place the tie on the brink before the return leg.

The manager’s next press conference will be closely scrutinised for any further clues about his selection. Whether he fields a more defensive shape or pushes an attacking midfielder into a false-nine role, the decision will be dissected by pundits and fans alike.

One thing is certain: the Champions League does not wait for administrative oversights. For Celtic, the next 90 minutes will reveal whether O’Neill’s squad depth is sufficient—or if the absence exposes a deeper vulnerability in a squad still chasing continental respectability.
