Wissa double gives Newcastle boss Jaissle winning start at 10-man Valencia

Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle tenure began with a statement of intent. A 2-1 comeback victory at 10-man Valencia, sealed by Yoane Wissa’s second-half double, offered a glimpse of the German’s ambitions—even as the match teetered on the edge of farce. The Mestalla pitchside drama, from Anthony Elanga’s red-card horror tackle to the massed brawl that followed, threatened to overshadow Jaissle’s first competitive act. Instead, Wissa’s composed finish and unselfish link-up play underlined why Newcastle’s new boss sees him as a cornerstone of his project.

From nightmare start to controlled recovery

Jaissle’s baptism was anything but smooth. Valencia’s Filip Ugrinic rifled home inside five minutes, exposing Newcastle’s early fragility and forcing an immediate change of shape. Then, in the 26th minute, Jose Gaya’s reckless tackle on Elanga sparked pandemonium. The Sweden winger was stretchered off with a shin contusion, and the confrontation between both benches escalated into a full-blown mêlée. By half-time, Newcastle trailed and Jaissle faced his first real test.

The response was swift. New arrivals Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur, handed their debuts in Spain, injected energy and organisation. Toure’s direct running destabilised Valencia’s backline, while Steur’s pressing disrupted their build-up. Most crucially, Jaissle’s substitutions shifted the balance. Wissa, introduced at the interval, levelled in the 52nd minute after pouncing on a defensive error. Seven minutes later, Toure broke clear to tee up Wissa for the winner—a finish that spoke to the new striker’s predatory instincts.

Jaissle’s side nearly added a third in stoppage time when Jacob Murphy’s whipped cross found Toure, but the flag intervened. Still, the win—Newcastle’s first in Spain since 2019—delivered a morale boost on a day when Bruno Guimaraes’ £75m move to Arsenal was confirmed. Jaissle’s appointment now carries tangible early dividends, even if the path to them was littered with VAR-worthy moments.

Wissa’s redemption and Newcastle’s new guard

Wissa’s double was more than a personal milestone; it was a declaration of intent. The Congolese forward, signed last summer from Lorient, had endured a frustrating spell under Eddie Howe, often confined to the bench. Under Jaissle, he seized his chance. His first goal stemmed from a defensive miscue, his second from Toure’s incisive run—a sequence that highlighted the complementary talents of Newcastle’s new-look attack.

The performance also offered reassurance about Jaissle’s tactical flexibility. His side absorbed early pressure, then switched to a more aggressive mid-block after Elanga’s injury. The introduction of Aladji Bamba, another debutant, added further dynamism, while Steur’s industry down the right provided width Newcastle lacked in the opening exchanges. Bamba and Martin Hornicek’s first outing may have been fleeting, but their presence underscored Jaissle’s willingness to blood youth.

Yet the match’s defining narrative remained Wissa’s redemption. His composure under pressure, particularly in the box, suggested he can thrive in Jaissle’s system. With Guimaraes gone and the midfield reshaping, Wissa’s form will be pivotal to Newcastle’s top-four push. Jaissle’s blueprint, outlined in his pre-season interviews, now has a tangible first chapter.

What comes next for Jaissle and Newcastle

Jaissle’s next challenge arrives swiftly. Wednesday’s friendly against Everton at Murrayfield will test his squad’s cohesion under fresh demands. The trip to Edinburgh, a rare outing outside the usual pre-season circuits, offers a chance to refine tactics ahead of the Premier League’s return. Newcastle’s transfer business, meanwhile, remains fluid. The loss of Guimaraes has left a void in midfield, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg—linked with a £13m move from Marseille—emerging as a potential replacement.

The Valencia win, however, provides a psychological lift. Jaissle’s side showed resilience, tactical adaptability, and a killer instinct in attack. The red-card controversy and Elanga’s injury are reminders that pre-season is not without risk, but the core message was clear: Newcastle are evolving under their new manager. Wissa’s goals were the headline, but Toure’s industry and Steur’s pressing were the foundations of a performance that suggests Jaissle’s project is already taking shape.

For a club desperate to end its top-four drought, the Mestalla victory was a statement—not of invincibility, but of intent. Jaissle’s next test will be whether he can sustain this momentum when competitive football resumes.
