Virginia women’s soccer returned to action on Friday with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over La Salle at Klöckner Stadium, a result that keeps the Cavaliers in the hunt for a top-four finish in the Atlantic 10. The win, the team’s third in four matches, sends a clear signal that Tony Da Luz’s side remains a contender in the conference title race, even as the schedule tightens. The Cavaliers moved to within two points of the conference’s third-place spot with the result, keeping their postseason hopes alive.

A controlled start, then a controlled finish

The opening exchanges saw Virginia probe patiently, with La Salle absorbing early pressure before breaking forward in short bursts. The Cavaliers settled into possession, using quick switches of play to stretch the Explorers’ defense, but found a resolute backline difficult to unpick. It wasn’t until the 29th minute that the deadlock was broken, when a well-worked corner routine—rehearsed repeatedly in training—found the head of senior defender Emma Stevens, who powered a header past the keeper to open the scoring. The goal, the first conceded by La Salle in three matches, came from a set-piece that had been drilled in midweek preparation.

La Salle responded with urgency after the break, pushing two center-backs into midfield to press higher and force turnovers. Their approach paid dividends in the 58th minute, when a counterattack culminated in a strike from outside the box by midfielder Sofia Rossi, who beat the Virginia goalkeeper at his near post. The equalizer briefly shifted momentum, but the Cavaliers regrouped quickly, with their midfield pivot of junior midfielder Ava Thompson and senior playmaker Leah Carter shielding the defense and allowing the full-backs to push forward. Within six minutes, Virginia reclaimed the lead through a second goal, this time from open play, as a through ball split the defense and left freshman forward Mia Patel one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

The third goal arrived in the 74th minute, when a La Salle clearance fell to senior midfielder Jordan Hayes 25 yards from goal. A first-time strike curled into the top corner, sealing a result that had looked in doubt just minutes earlier. The Cavaliers held firm for the remainder of the match, with their defensive line marshaled by captain and senior defender Emma Stevens, who made crucial interventions to snuff out late pressure, including a last-ditch block in the 87th minute to preserve the lead.

La Salle’s resilience meets Virginia’s composure

La Salle entered the match unbeaten in their last three outings, with a defense that had conceded just twice in that span. Their backline, organized in a back-three under head coach Maria Sanchez, frustrated Virginia’s wingers for long periods, particularly in the first half, when they forced repeated long-range efforts. The Explorers’ goalkeeper, sophomore Elena Vasquez, made several saves to deny Virginia’s forwards, including a point-blank stop from six yards in the 37th minute that kept the score at 1-0 at the break.

In transition, La Salle looked dangerous, using the pace of their wide attackers, including graduate student winger Chloe Bennett, to exploit the space behind Virginia’s full-backs. Their equalizer stemmed from a rapid break in the 58th minute, with the ball played forward in two passes before Rossi unleashed a curling effort that evaded the goalkeeper’s dive. The goal exposed a momentary lapse in concentration, but Virginia’s response was immediate: a double substitution that brought on sophomore midfielder Nina Park and freshman defender Harper Lee, followed by a tactical switch to a more compact 4-4-2 shape.

The Cavaliers’ ability to absorb pressure and strike efficiently set them apart. While La Salle’s approach was direct and high-tempo, Virginia’s build-up was deliberate, with goalkeeper senior Claire O’Connor distributing short to defenders and midfielders dropping to create numerical superiority in the first phase. The difference in the second half came from Virginia’s willingness to commit numbers forward in transition, a strategy that paid off with two goals in twelve minutes, including Patel’s clinical finish in the 64th minute.

What comes next for both sides

For Virginia, the win moves them to within two points of the conference’s third-place spot, with a favorable run of fixtures ahead. The Cavaliers face two road games in their next three matches, including a trip to Dayton on October 11, a match that will test their away form and defensive resilience. Da Luz will likely rotate his squad to manage fatigue, given the physical intensity of the contest against La Salle, but the depth of his bench—featuring sophomore forward Ava Martinez and freshman midfielder Sophie Nguyen—offers flexibility.

La Salle, meanwhile, drop to fifth in the table with a game in hand on the teams above them. Their next match is at home to Saint Joseph’s on October 9, a fixture that offers an opportunity to regain momentum and address the defensive vulnerabilities exposed against Virginia, particularly in transition. The Explorers’ coach will need to tighten their shape in midfield while maintaining the attacking cohesion that has served them well in recent weeks, with Rossi and Bennett leading the line.

The result underscores the competitiveness of the Atlantic 10 this season, where margins between teams are slim. With several sides still harboring ambitions of a top-half finish, every point carries weight. Virginia’s victory is a statement of intent, but the real test lies in how they respond to the physical and tactical demands of the coming weeks, including a clash with Richmond on October 16 that could prove pivotal in the race for postseason qualification.

For now, the Cavaliers can reflect on a performance that combined control with clinical finishing. La Salle, despite the loss, showed enough character to push Virginia close, but ultimately fell short when it mattered most. Both teams head into their next fixtures with clear objectives—and the knowledge that the race for the Atlantic 10’s automatic qualification spots is far from decided.
