World Cup final LIVE: Fifa investigation demanded after disgraceful Argentina throw punches at Spain players

Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final in New Jersey was overshadowed by disgraceful scenes at the final whistle, as Argentine players launched a violent brawl that has triggered demands for FIFA to impose severe sanctions. The European champions deserved their triumph, but the conduct of their opponents in the dying moments has cast a shadow over the tournament’s climax. The match itself was a tactical masterclass by Spain, who controlled possession, created the clearest chances, and ultimately broke the deadlock through Ferran Torres’s extra-time strike at MetLife Stadium.

What happened in the final minutes

The match remained deadlocked after 90 minutes and extra time, with Spain dominating possession and chances. Ferran Torres’s extra-time winner broke the deadlock, securing the title for Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The celebrations were short-lived, however, as Argentina’s frustration boiled over.

At the final whistle, Leandro Paredes initiated a violent confrontation, throwing punches at multiple Spain players including Rodri, Eric García, and Gavi. Paredes was shown a second red card for his actions, which included kicking Eric García to the floor and allegedly placing his hand around the defender’s throat during a heated confrontation. The chaos escalated as Argentina’s players refused to engage with the trophy presentation, turning their backs on the victors in a display of poor sportsmanship. The Argentine midfielder’s red card came moments after he had already been booked twice in the second half, compounding his team’s disciplinary crisis.

Why FIFA must act now

The demands for FIFA to intervene are growing, with calls for the governing body to ban multiple Argentine players involved in the brawl. Enzo Fernández had already been sent off earlier in the match for two bookable offences, leaving Argentina with ten men. The additional red card for Paredes, combined with the post-match misconduct, has intensified scrutiny on Argentina’s conduct.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee will now face pressure to impose heavy penalties, including lengthy suspensions, to deter such behaviour in future tournaments. The governing body has previously taken a hardline stance on violent conduct, and this incident—captured in full view of global audiences—demands a proportionate response. Failure to act decisively would set a dangerous precedent for future finals, particularly given the high-profile nature of the World Cup final and the visibility of the misconduct.

The match itself: Spain’s dominance

Despite the ugly finish, Spain’s performance was a masterclass in control. They outplayed Argentina for large periods, creating the clearest chances and controlling the tempo. Torres’s goal, though controversial in timing, was a reward for their superior play. The European champions had the better of the contest, while Argentina’s aggression—both on and off the pitch—undermined their claim to the title.

The victory marks a historic double for Spain, who had already claimed the European Championship earlier in the year. Young star Lamine Yamal, who became one of the youngest players to win both tournaments, took a moment to acknowledge Lionel Messi after the final, a gesture that may signal the end of the Argentine’s international career. Yamal’s composure and influence throughout the tournament have cemented his status as one of football’s brightest talents, while Spain’s structured, possession-based approach underlined their tactical superiority.

With Argentina facing potential sanctions, the fallout from this final will extend far beyond the trophy presentation. FIFA’s response will be watched closely—not just by the players involved, but by every team that competes in future World Cups. The integrity of the competition depends on it.
